ChristmasReflections–BostonLiturgicalDanceEnsemble Dear Parishioners, PreparingforAdventviatheSt.IgnatiusApp Dear Parishioners, It’s not too late to experience the Ignatian Way in the Year of Mercy this Advent via the St. Ignatius App. As you know, this is my final year as pastor and this means it’s the final year for Christmas Reflections at Boston College. If you are new to the parish, you may not know that I have been presenting Christmas Choreography for 35 years! After 28 years of A Dancers’ Christmas and 7 years of Christmas Reflections, I’ll be closing the curtain on this wonderful holiday tradition. I’m told that there are some parishioners who have never seen one of these productions! So if you’ve been before or never been, I’d urge you to see this year’s final performance. We have a gifted corps of professional dancers, children and the O’Dwyer School of Irish Dancing. Featured guest artists are Steven Cornwall from Jamaica and Khiara Bridges, who also happens to be a Professor of Law at Boston University. Christmas Reflections is such a joyful celebration of the season that I’m sure you’ll enjoy it. You may even see me on stage dancing! If you haven’t yet downloaded the St. Ignatius App, you can do it in either of the following ways: iPhone – go to the App Store and type in St. Ignatius Chestnut Hill, follow instructions to download the app Android – go to Google Play and type in St. Ignatius Chestnut Hill, follow instructions to download the app AdventTaizePrayer During Advent, we are gathering on Monday Evenings at 7:15pm for Taize Prayer in the upper church. These prayers gatherings, a favorite of our parish, provide a time of quiet candlelit meditation, simple music, uplifting scripture and peaceful silence. Please join us and bring a friend. Performances take place in the BC Robsham Theater, diagonally across from the Parish. The dates are December 18th, 7:30pm; 19th, 3:00pm; 20th, 3:00pm. Tickets can be purchased on line at www.bc.edu/offices/robsham/tickets.html or phone 617-5524800. Reserved seating is $20. Groups of 10 are $15 per person. AdventProgramwithMarshaMirkin What does God model and teach us about mercy? On Saturday, December 12, from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm, we will study a few of the many Biblical verses and prayers that explore the divine attributes of mercy and reflect on how we may enact them in our daily lives. We will look at the Hebrew Scriptures to see how our fore parents attempted to move into a place of compassion and loving kindness (two of the attributes of mercy) and examine some of God’s responses to their stumbling. Please join us on December 12 in the Lannon Chapel for some Advent inspiration. In addition to the performance, there will be a wonderful Gala O COME ALL YE FAITHFUL on Saturday December 19th following the 3PM performance. This wine and gourmet food tasting is fund-raiser for the Boston Liturgical Dance Ensemble and will take place at the Jesuit Residence, 130 Beacon St. Tickets are $100 per person and include admission to Christmas Reflections. I hope you can attend one of the final performances and even the gala! Sincerely, Fr. Bob TheIgnatianWayintheYearofMercy,FromAdventto Pentecost-AJourneywithStIgnatiusofLoyola Advent2,Scripture For God has commanded that every lofty mountain be made low, and that the age-old depths and gorges be filled to level ground, that Israel may advance secure in the glory of God. The forests and every fragrant kind of tree have overshadowed Israel at God’s command; for God is leading Israel in joy by the light of his glory, with his mercy and justice for company. Reflection The Second Sunday of Advent calls us to a change of heart, to let ourselves be restored by the God who loves us, hears us, heals us. Our God is filled with mercy and loving kindness. TheLifeofIgnatius After his defeat in battle, Ignatius needed to rest and recuperate. He spent 6 months in his sister’s home in Loyola. Reading books on the life of Christ and the lives of the saints, he experienced a profound joy when he thought of living his life in a different way. He was consoled as he thought of doing all for the Greater Glory of God. QuestionforReflection As the prophet Baruch says, God is doing something new for the people of Israel, removing all the obstacles that keep them from God’s mercy and justice, which is the source of joy for them. What are the obstacles that get in the way of your receiving God’s merciful love? Are you open to the gift? Ignatius was resistant to receiving this love and mercy for the first 30 years of his life! How about you? FortheGreaterGlory As you reflect on this question, you are invited to view For The Greater Glory, the dance/theater piece on the Spiritual Exercises, created by Fr. Bob. From the song of Praise through the beginning of the Prodigal Son story. (13 mins) You can access the video through the America media website. Americamagazine.org SeekingHousingforWestminsterChoir The world-renowned Westminster Choir of Princeton, New Jersey will be performing at St. Ignatius on January 8, 2016. The varied program will be sung by the 40 voice touring choir, as part of their winter tour. You will not want to miss it! We are providing housing for the 44 members of the choir on the night of January 7, 2016 (Thursday). If you are able and interested in hosting any of the students, or for more information, please contact Timothy Zimmerman zimmerta@bc.edu, 617552-6114. Thank you, in advance, for your generous hospitality. We could not run our programming without you! The Family Mass Giving Tree is full of ornaments for the taking! Gifts will be collected this year for Nativity Preparatory School in Jamaica Plain (sweater vests), Horizons for Homeless Children in Roxbury (pajamas) and the Refugee Resettlement Program of Catholic Charities Boston (dinner time and sleep time basket items). New, unwrapped items are to be returned by Sunday, December 13 for delivery the following week. A MOST GRATEFUL THANK YOU to all of those families who made a donation toward our purchase of 250 new Spirit & Song hymnals. The hymnals have arrived and will be used for the first time on Sunday, December 6, at both Family Masses. This 3rd edition features 360 songs, updated texts, prayers, responses and musical settings for the new English translation of the Roman Missal; revised text for the Order of Mass in addition to five mass settings chosen for contemporary ensembles; contemporary Catholic music, bilingual, English-Spanish songs alongside fresh arrangements of traditional hymns. Also included are selections for Morning and Evening prayer, Reconciliation, Eucharistic adoration, retreats and more. They will replace the 2nd version books which are almost 15 years old. Some hymnals will have bookplates in memory of or in honor of someone dear to our Family Mass community. Again, a heartfelt THANK YOU! AdventJourneytoChristmas-Ideasformakingtheseasonspecial ! The "Praying Advent" website offers many helpful resources for individuals and families who want some help to begin the season of Advent. In common sense language, the site helps us pray through Advent as we may never have done before. There is a Daily Prayer for each day of Advent, based on the Collects of the New Roman Missal. Just Google "Praying Advent" to find the site on the Creighton University online ministries web site. ! Check out www.pray-as-you-go.org or 3-minute-retreats-dailyonline-prayer.htm (tambien en espanol: 3 minutos de retiro), ! For the 2nd Sunday of Advent (Dec 6): Light two purple candle on your Advent wreath (use prayer guides for Advent wreath) ! The Church begins Year C. The Gospel readings come mostly from Luke, with John providing a number of Gospel readings throughout the year. We have a three-year cycle of Sunday Scripture readings at Mass identified by the letters A,B, and C. Each Sunday, the Church proclaims 3 readings, generally one each from the Old Testament, New Testament and Gospels. A psalm is also assuaged to each Mass as a response to the first reading. OutreachMinistries HolidayOutreach: Thank you for your participation in our holiday Outreach efforts. Through your generosity, we will have served more than 200 Guests at Pine Street Inn Shattuck Shelter this weekend. We are grateful to Crescent Ridge Dairy for donating its delicious egg nog for the Shelter Meal. Also, thanks to your incredible generosity, we’ll be giving more than 800 gifts to eleven of our ministry partners to distribute to their clients. AndSpreadingMoreHolidayCheer: Ten parish family members spent a day at a Habitat for Humanity Greater Boston worksite. They continued a long-standing parish tradition of working with Habitat to build affordable housing for deserving families. St.IgnatiusPledgeProgram Thank you to the many members of the parish who have responded to the pledge letter from Father Bob, either by signing up or giving us changes in your information. For those who haven’t yet had a chance to respond, you can still send in the card or can call Kyle Crosby at 617-552-6119. We are best able to plan for and use the resources you’ve entrusted to us, through the Annual Support Program. The more people participate, the better we can plan and budget. As always, we are so grateful for your support. AdventLiturgy When the Liturgy Commission came together to pray about our communal celebrations during the Advent season, we took note of the many expressions of Joy that are in the scriptures beginning with the 2nd Sunday. Since Pope Francis has called for a year of Mercy beginning December 8th, we decided that Joy and Mercy would be the themes for this Advent. When you come to St. Ignatius beginning December 5th, you will receive a Mercy Card (Dec.5/6) or a Joy Card (Dec.12/13). You will be invited to place the card in the second passing of the basket. In doing so you are making the promise to perform an act of mercy or an act of joy for someone during the week. On the third Sunday you can choose :-) We hope that this will make your Advent even more meaningful. BookDiscussion On December 13 at 11:15 am, the discussion of Abounding in Kindness by Elizabeth Johnson will continue in the living room of the Parish Center. Attendance at the previous discussion is not necessary for joining this December meeting. What we do with our voices and in music creates a setting for prayer and worship. We express meaning more deeply in song. St. Ignatius invites us to encounter God with our imagination. Music, the song we create to praise God, amplifies our prayer and shapes the imaginative space where we share in God’s love for us.
