This gives us an opportunity as a Jesuit parish to enter more deeply into the experience of Mercy as St. Ignatius experienced it in his life and in the Spiritual Exercises. If you haven’t yet downloaded the St. Ignatius App, please do before we begin this pilgrimage together. We’ve included ways in which you can download the App to your smartphone or other device. Sincerely, Fr. Bob iPhone – go to the App Store and type in St. Ignatius Chestnut Hill, follow instructions to download the app Android – go to Google Play and type in St. Ignatius Chestnut Hill, follow instructions to download the app OpeningtheDoorofMercy Pope Francis invites us to begin a Year of Mercy this Advent. How will you start the journey? Join us for the Parish Day of Reflection on Saturday, December 5 from 10:00am to 4:00pm. Reflections shared by Fr. J.A. Loftus and Martha Sullivan. Come for prayer, food and community. The retreat day will be held in Simboli Hall and Chapel on the Brighton Campus of BC. Please register by December 1 by contacting Kathy Maher at katherine.maher@bc.edu AdventTaizePrayer During Advent, we are gathering on Monday Evenings at 7:15pm for Taize Prayer in the upper church. These prayers gatherings, a favorite of our parish, provide a time of quiet candlelit meditation, simple music, uplifting scripture and peaceful silence. Please join us and bring a friend. AdventProgramwithMarshaMirkin What does God model and teach us about mercy? On Saturday, December 12, from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm, we will study a few of the many Biblical verses and prayers that explore the divine attributes of mercy and reflect on how we may enact them in our daily lives. We will look at the Hebrew Scriptures to see how our fore parents attempted to move into a place of compassion and loving kindness (two of the attributes of mercy) and examine some of God’s responses to their stumbling. Please join us on December 12 in the Lannon Chapel for some Advent inspiration. SeekingHousingforWestminsterChoir The world-renowned Westminster Choir of Princeton, New Jersey will be performing at St. Ignatius on January 8, 2016. The varied program will be sung by the 40 voice touring choir, as part of their winter tour. You will not want to miss it! We are providing housing for the 44 members of the choir on the night of January 7, 2016 (Thursday). If you are able and interested in hosting any of the students, or for more information, please contact Timothy Zimmerman zimmerta@bc.edu, 617552-6114. Thank you, in advance, for your generous hospitality. WanttoreceivetheBulletinbyemailEachWeek? You can have the bulletin emailed to you every Saturday morning. We could not run our programming without you! NovemberisPledgeMonth Members of the Finance Council spoke at all of all of the Masses a few weeks ago about the Annual Pledge Program and also introduced parishioners to the Fr. Bob Legacy Fund. If you were not able to join us, here is what the Finance Council members had to say: The Family Mass Giving Tree is full of ornaments for the taking! Gifts will be collected this year for Nativity Preparatory School in Jamaica Plain (sweater vests), Horizons for Homeless Children in Roxbury (pajamas) and the Refugee Resettlement Program of Catholic Charities Boston (dinner time and sleep time basket items). New, unwrapped items are to be returned by Sunday, December 13 for delivery the following week. Every November, we ask members of our community to pledge their financial commitment to the parish. St. Ignatius is an incredible community driven by the hope and promise that God has for each and every one of us. We have been able to come together this year as a community to provide religious education for over 450 children, celebrate 400 weekend Masses, celebrate holidays and important life moments, regularly feed the homeless, clothe the vulnerable, build homes, provide spiritual direction and enrichment, and work to proclaim the Good News in a world that deeply hungers for it. All of this happens because of your commitment and generosity and we thank you for that. A MOST GRATEFUL THANK YOU to all of those families who made a donation toward our purchase of 250 new Spirit & Song hymnals. The hymnals have arrived and will be used for the first time on Sunday, December 6, at both Family Masses. This 3rd edition features 360 songs, updated texts, prayers, responses and musical settings for the new English translation of the Roman Missal; revised text for the Order of Mass in addition to five mass settings chosen for contemporary ensembles; contemporary Catholic music, bilingual, English-Spanish songs alongside fresh arrangements of traditional hymns. Also included are selections for Morning and Evening prayer, Reconciliation, Eucharistic adoration, retreats and more. They will replace the 2nd version books which are almost 15 years old. Some hymnals will have bookplates in memory of or in honor of someone dear to our Family Mass community. Again, a heartfelt THANK YOU! AdventJourneytoChristmas-Ideasformakingtheseasonspecial ! The "Praying Advent" website offers many helpful resources for individuals and families who want some help to begin the season of Advent. In common sense language, the site helps us pray through Advent as we may never have done before. There is a Daily Prayer for each day of Advent, based on the Collects of the New Roman Missal. Just Google "Praying Advent" to find the site on the Creighton University online ministries web site. ! Check out www.pray-as-you-go.org or 3-minute-retreats-dailyonline-prayer.htm (tambien en espanol: 3 minutos de retiro), ! For the 1st Sunday of Advent (Nov 29): Light one purple candle on your Advent wreath (use prayer guides for Advent wreath) ! Starting Nov 29, the Church begins Year C. The Gospel readings come mostly from Luke, with John providing a number of Gospel readings throughout the year. We have a three-year cycle of Sunday Scripture readings at Mass identified by the letters A,B, and C. Each Sunday, the Church proclaims 3 readings, generally one each from the Old Testament, New Testament and Gospels. A psalm is also assuaged to each Mass as a response to the first reading. We are best able to plan for, and use the resources you’ve entrusted to us, through the Annual Support Program. The more people participate, the better we can plan and budget. If you don’t already participate you’ll should have received a letter from Fr. Bob this week about the program. We hope you will feel inspired to join. Additionally, over the past few weeks, Fr. Bob has informed you of the Legacy Campaign we have established to honor his 27 years as pastor and address the needs and areas of greatest importance to him as he finishes his time with us. Fr. Bob has touched thousands of people in his nearly three decades here. We are grateful for his insightful, spiritual leadership, and stewardship of our beloved parish and hope that you will join this effort and consider a gift in honor of Fr. Bob. You will be hearing more from us about how you can participate and help support the parish in this new and exciting way. Your consideration and continued generosity are sincerely and most deeply appreciated. KatieJillsonConcert–November29 Soprano Katie Jillson, of our 10:00 am choir, will present a vocal recital this weekend on Sunday, November 29, at 2:30pm in the upper church. All are welcome. A freewill offering will be accepted at the door. ChristmasChoir Any singers are welcome to join our music ministry for Caroling at Campion Center and for Midnight Mass. People will die of fright in anticipation of what is coming upon the world, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. And then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. But when these signs begin to happen, stand erect and raise your heads because your redemption is at hand. Reflection The first Sunday of Advent begins the liturgical year with images that portray the world coming to an end. It always begins with crisis and cataclysm. Something is about to happen that will change everything. LaVidaIgnaciana Ignacio experimentó un cataclismo en su vida que lo llevará a estar más cercano a Dios como un peregrino. En 1521 sufrió una herida por una bala de cañón en la batalla de Pamplona que le machucó los huesos de la pierna. Regresó a Loyola como un hombre, herido y vencido. TheLifeofIgnatius Ignatius experienced a cataclysmic event that put into motion the events that would lead him closer to God as a pilgrim. In 1521, he was wounded in the Battle of Pamplona by a cannonball that crushed the bones of his leg. He returned to Loyola, a defeated, wounded man. Preguntaparareflexión ¿Cómo es que la vida de Ignacio refleja tu propia vida? ¿Ha habido ocasiones cuando has sentido que tu mundo se acababa? ¿Puedes verte a ti mismo en este hombre, cuyas esperanzas y sueños fueron destruidos? QuestionforReflection How does the life of Ignatius reflect your life? Have there been times when it has felt like your world was “coming to an end”. Can you see yourself in this man who has his great hopes and dreams shattered? OutreachMinistries HolidayOutreach:LastWeekend! This is the final weekend that the Gift Drive Tree will be up and that sign-ups for the Saturday, December 5, Pine Street Inn Shattuck Shelter Holiday Meal will take place. We’ll need food donations, as well as “time” donations for kitchen prep. Please stop by the Gathering Space to decide how you will be involved in these efforts. PLEASE NOTE: Gifts should be returned the weekend of December 5/6.Thank you for your participation in our holiday Outreach efforts. AdventLiturgy When the Liturgy Commission came together to pray about our communal celebrations during the Advent season, we took note of the many expressions of Joy that are in the scriptures beginning with the 2nd Sunday. Since Pope Francis has called for a year of Mercy beginning December 8th, we decided that Joy and Mercy would be the themes for this Advent. When you come to St Ignatius beginning December 5th you will receive a Mercy Card (Dec.5/6) or a Joy Card (Dec.12/13). You will be invited to place the card in the second passing of the basket. In doing so you are making the promise to perform an act of mercy or an act of joy for someone during the week. On the third Sunday you can choose :-) We hope that this will make your Advent even more meaningful. FoundationsofIgnatianPrayer Foundations of Ignatian Prayer meets this Sunday, November 29th from 3:30-5:00 in the Choir/Media Room. Join us for "Praying Your Graced History" presented by Martha Sullivan. All are welcome!
