Biographical Sketch Dr. Paul A. Dagenais was born and raised in Canada. He obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry from the University of Ottawa in 1976. After a series of laboratory related jobs, he pursued a Master of Arts degree in Communication Disorders from Northern Michigan University in Marquette, graduating in 1983. Subsequently he obtained his Doctor of Philosophy degree in Speech and Hearing Sciences from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville in 1987. Dr. Dagenais became a Research Assistant Professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 1987. This was a research position involved with the development of speech training devices for the severely hearing-impaired and the deaf. This involved work with Palatometry (Electropalatography) and Glossometry. In 1990, Dr. Dagenais joined the faculty in the Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology at the University of South Alabama. Currently he holds the rank of Professor. Dr. Dagenais has taught students in the four programs the department offers (Undergraduate, Master of Speech Language Pathology, Doctor of Audiology and Doctor of Philosophy). He has directed many master’s thesis projects and doctoral level dissertations. Dr. Dagenais has conducted research in the areas of deaf speech, articulation, and neurogenics. His more current research has been in the area of speech intelligibility subsequent to brain damage and evaluation of diagnostic tools used to assess minority/ethnic populations. He currently has published 35 peer-reviewed articles and four book chapters. He has also given over 50 presentations nationally and internationally. Dr. Dagenais has been certified by the American Speech Language Hearing Association in SpeechLanguage Pathology (CCC-SLP) since 1985. He has been licensed as a Speech-Language Pathologist in the State of Alabama since 1990.
