CENTENNIAL HONORS COLLEGE Western Illinois University Undergraduate Research Day 2016 PodiumPresentation TheBeautyMythPlayedThroughinVideoGames EmmaGoldman FacultyMentor:BarbaraAshwood English ThisresearchpaperexploresthetopicofsexisminthevideogameindustrybyapplyingNaomiWolf’s conceptofTheBeautyMyth.TheBeautyMythexplainsthatthemediaisdamagingtowardswomen duetonegativegenderstereotypingandviolentsexualimagery.Inthispiece,Iusescholarlyresearchto criticallyanalyzehowwellTheBeautyMythisexemplifiedintheformofvideogames.Ipresent evidencetoshowthatthegenderstereotypedimagesinvideogamesdonotmakemenmoreviolent andwomenmoresubmissive,but,intheend,theystillpromotesexism.Manyvideogamesutilize genderstereotypesbyglorifyinghyper-masculinemalecharactersanddemeaningfemalecharactersby objectifyingthem.Studieshaveproventhatmenwhoplayvideogamesthatusegenderstereotypesare morelikelytohavepatronizingattitudestowardwomenandtobemoretoleranttothesexual harassmentofwomen.Ontheotherhand,womenwhoseesexualizedfemalevideogamecharacters aremorelikelytoadvocatefortheequalitywomenandarelesstoleranttosexualharassment.
