Marisol, ‘18 Hometown: San Francisco, CA Major: Social Work & Criminal Justice Personal Interests: I enjoy surfing, playing guitar, hiking, watching movies, playing volleyball, going to the beach, and traveling. Campus Involvement: I am involved with Best Buddies, the Criminal Justice Society, Campus Ministry, the Emerging Leaders Program, Habitat for Humanity, the Psychology Club, and the Social Work Association. How I Can Help As Your Peer Mentor: Moving away from home and having to do everything for yourself can be really overwhelming at first. There are so many resources at Marist, and that's one of the reasons why it's such a great place to be. I'm here to guide you and direct you to the places on campus where you can get help for whatever you need. What I Was Nervous About: Coming all the way from California and literally not knowing anyone, I was really nervous about making new friends. During Welcome Week, I realized there was nothing to be nervous about; everyone was very outgoing and also looking to make friends. Just being friendly and talking to people during the various Welcome Week activities helped out a lot. What I Was Excited About: I was very excited about getting involved in things that really interested me but that I didn't get a chance to participate in during high school. After checking out the Activities Fair, I realized there was even more to get involved in than I thought! It was great to participate in things that I was interested in while also meeting people with similar interests. Advice for the Class of 2019: Make an effort to talk to as many people as you can during the first few weeks. This might seem like a weird or awkward thing to do, especially if you're shy, but it really is the best way to make new friends. It's also really important to discover where/how you study the best. I was used to always doing homework in my room, but once I discovered the li‐ brary during the second semester, I started studying much more and doing much better in school. And definitely make time for yourself. “I'm so excited to meet you in the Fall! Have an amazing summer!”
