Homework for Mrs. Steinmark’s Class
Reading – Each child should read with an adult at least 15 minutes per night for 5
nights during each week. Record the minutes read on the Reading Record that comes
home each Friday in the Friday Folder. The Reading Record should be returned to
school the following Friday for a star on the Classroom Reading Chart. These stars will
be traded for an Ice-Cream Party at the end of the year. A new Reading Record will be
sent home every Friday.
Poetry Notebooks – We will work on two or three poems in class each week. These
will come home every Friday in a three-ring Poetry Notebook. Each child needs to read
the poems aloud to an adult, who will then sign the signature page at the front of the
notebook. The Poetry Notebook MUST be returned to school by Thursday of the
following week so new poems can be added.
Math Homelinks – These activities coincide with our Everyday Math Curriculum and
are meant to provide practice for skills learned in class. These should not take more
than 10 minutes to complete. They are also a good way for parents to see what we are
learning in math. These will come home in a blue Math Homelink Folder. This folder
will come home most nights Monday through Thursday, so please look for it on those
nights. It MUST be returned the next day so new Homelinks can be sent home. It will
never come home on Fridays.
Sight Words – Each child is responsible for learning sight words appropriate to their
reading ability to further expand their reading vocabulary. These will come home in a
purple Sight Word Folder with directions, word lists and word cards. This is
individualized and self-paced according to the child’s ability. Once the child knows all
the words on the current list, the folder should to be returned to school and a test will be
given. If passed, a new list will be sent home to be practiced. Once a child passes all
the lists, the purple Sight Word Folder will no longer be sent home.
Spelling – A spelling list will come home in the Friday Folder each week and the test
will be given the following Thursday. Details will come home in the Friday Folder.
No Excuse Spelling Words – Each child is responsible for learning the 35 No Excuse
Spelling Words for First Grade. Please refer to the list given out at Parent Night. These
will be pre-tested at the beginning of the year and worked on in class throughout the
year. Please reinforce them at home. A post-test will be given in May.
Thank you for supporting your child by making sure they get their homework done and
returned to school on time. Together we do make a difference!
