Dear Parents,
We had a very productive week. We finished a unit on Colors in which we
wrote about them, graphed them, and even ate them. Next week we will spend time
with Nursery Rhymes. This is a great unit to reinforce rhyming skills as well as
sequencing and writing. I have completed the DRA2 testing as well as other
beginning of the year assessments and have formed reading groups. We will
“practice” in our groups next week and will be ready for parent volunteers to help us
with reading groups Tuesday, September 8th. If you signed up to help with reading
groups, please come at 10:15 on your day. Thanks for the help!
As stated at Parent Night, each child will be responsible for learning to
read a list of sight words that pertain to materials they will be reading in reading group.
These words will be different for the different reading levels in our class. We will have a
quiz over the words on Fridays. Each week a new list of words will be sent home. The
students just have to be able to read them by sight, not spell them! (Remember that these
words are in addition to the words in the Red Sight Word Folder that the kids need to be
working on at home.) Your child’s words for next week are:
Just a few reminders about homework:
*Please listen to your child read their poems in their Poetry Notebook each weekend and
send it back to school on Mondays.
*The Reading Record (found in each week’s Friday Folder) needs to be filled out to
record the week’s reading done at home and the kids need to bring it back to school each
Friday for a star on the reading chart.
*The Sight Words printed on my Friday note each week need to be put on cards and
studied a few minutes each night at home. A quiz will be given over the words on
Fridays.
*Math Homelinks (in the blue folder) need to be done the night they come home and
returned in the folder the next day. Remember that the folder will not come home
everyday but you need to LOOK for it everyday!
*Book Bags will come home each Friday. Please listen to your child read the book/books
inside and return the books and the bag on Mondays unless otherwise instructed.
*Red Sight Word Folders need to be worked on at home and returned to school for a test
on or before the due date printed inside the folder.
*Also, please send the Friday Folder back to school every Monday. Thanks for your
help with homework. When we work together we really do make a difference!
