PIONEERS OF ENGINEERING
1759 to 1900
Dowlais Ironworks
"one of the World's great
industrial concerns".
Thomas Guest Leadership
July 1900, the Dowlais Iron Company and
Arthur Keen's Patent Nut and Bolt Company

PIONEERS OF ENGINEERING
Samuel Cody the Flying Cowboy
Born 6 March 1867 in the USA
Wild West showman
demonstrations of his horse
riding, shooting and lassoing
skills and early pioneer of
manned flight.
Cody War-Kites were used by the
British in World War I as a smaller
alternative to balloons for artillery
spotting

PIONEERS OF ENGINEERING
Airships - Nulli Secundus the first
powered airship flew for 3 hours 25
minutes with Cody in command
The British Army Aeroplane No 1 (Cody 1)
was a biplane built by Samuel Franklin Cody
in 1907 at the Army Balloon Factory at
Farnborough.
Cody 1 made the first recognised powered
and sustained flight in the United Kingdom on
16 October 1908

PIONEERS OF ENGINEERING
The Cody Tree
When Cody was testing his first
aeroplane, he tied it to a tree in order to
assess the pulling power of its propeller.
The tree became known as the Cody
Tree and survived for many years.
Aluminium replica was cast and it still
marks the spot to this day.

SUMMARY
• We have come a long way from the first flight in 1903 by the Wright Brothers.
London Heathrow handled 66m passengers and almost half a millions aircraft
movements in 2013 alone. Top 10 airports in 2013 handled over 500m
passengers.
• By 2032 it is estimated that worldwide more than 29,000 new large civil airliners,
24,000 business jets, 5,800 regional aircraft and 40,000 helicopters will be
required…almost 100,000 new platforms.
• Remember the UK has the largest aerospace industry in Europe and is second
only to the US worldwide; UK aerospace revenue was £24.2 billion in 2011
• You have a fantastic opportunity to engineer and to create the future, to be
pioneers, to break down those barriers and to engineer world leading products
