Police Say No Major Problems Reported During VEISHEA
More Than 100 Cited On Underage Drinking Charges
DES MOINES, Iowa -- Police said there were not any major problems during the
annual Iowa State University's VEISHEA celebration.
The annual VEISHEA event at ISU was named in 1922 and is an acronym made
up of the first letters of the colleges at ISU at that time -- Veterinary Medicine,
Engineering, Industrial Science, Home Economics and Agriculture.
Police made several arrests over the weekend connected to the celebration.
Iowa State officers and Ames police cited more than 100 people on charges of
possession of alcohol under the legal age.
They also had several complaints about the noise stemming from on-campus
concerts.
Police said the numbers are up from last year, but that the nice weather also
increased this year's attendance.
"I think the weekend went very well and with the nice weather it was a good test.
People had a good time and hopefully, future VEISHEAs will be the same," said
Cmdr. Jim Robinson of the Ames Police Department.
Robinson said this weekend's arrests were only slightly higher than in the fall
when there's a big home football game.
