TO: Business and Industry Partners FROM: DATE: RE: Job Shadowing Thank you for agreeing to be a work site for the School System Job Shadowing program. The purpose of a shadowing experience is to help students observe firsthand the occupations related to their career major. In some cases it may assist students in selecting a career major and/or prepare them for other work-based learning such as internships and apprenticeships. Enclosed are the application and the necessary permission forms for your student, including the date and time of his/her visit. The student will contact you to confirm the visit. Prior to the student reporting for the Job Shadowing, it is requested you complete the following activities. Assign one or more employees the responsibility of being with the student during their Job Shadowing Experience. Structure the students’ time while they are at your worksite. Compile a list of materials about your company that the students can take with them. During the Job Shadowing please cover the following items: Overview of the company Its impact on the local economy Salaries, earning power, benefits for employees What you are looking for in new employees as well as current employees The importance of reading, writing, math, science, and computer skills, or specific job skills to careers in your company Question the students about their career plans Assist students in completing the Job Shadowing Journal Also, please feel free to call the school at any time if questions or concerns arise. The only paper work we will need from you is the “Employer Evaluation Form” which the student will bring to the work site. Please complete the form, put it in a sealed envelope, and give it to the student. Again, thank you for your interest in the students of our school, and we would appreciate hearing from you on how we make the Shadowing Experience a more beneficial learning experience. Activities and procedures within Workforce Development Education are governed by the philosophy of simple fairness to all. Therefore, the policy of the school system is that all operations will be performed without regard to race, color, sex, national origin, or handicap.
