GKN Multimode eTransmission
GKN has launched a unique, Multimode
eTransmission for hybrid vehicles. The
transmission works in combination with
an electric motor, generator and internal
combustion engine to deliver greatly improved
fuel efficiency, high performance and
flexibility.
The powertrain can switch modes to operate in:
• Pure EV when the car is only driven by the electric
motor
• Series Hybrid when drive is supported by the
internal combustion engine (ICE) via generator in
situations with high power demand or when state of
charge (SOC) is low
• Parallel Hybrid with direct ICE support on the front
for best efficiency and maximum performance
This flexibility provides unmatched performance and
hybrid system efficiency.
A key element of the transmission is the hydraulic
clutch system which switches between EV, series
or parallel hybrid mode with smooth, comfortable
transition, fully transparent to the driver.

Significant development effort was required on the clutch system, lubrication, gear geometry
and packaging to deliver a unit which is compact, light, highly efficient and near-silent in
operation, with seamless shifting between operating modes.
