Successful Solutions Real-World Applications Monitoring Center Unites Vast Australian Fleet* Stabilizing the California Grid Quickly and Efficiently Challenge Origin Energy, Australia’s leading energy provider, had a huge job of supplying energy to the southeastern portion of a country defined by enormous distances – 4,000 square kilometers – between cities and towns known for unpredictable, sometimes extreme, weather. The power generation sources range from combined cycle gas and coal to wind and hydroelectric, separated by vast distances. Supplying reliable power every day to more than 4 million customers was a huge engineering challenge. Challenge In 2012, Southern California lost a source of dependable power generation when the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station was shut down. AES Huntington Beach Power Generating Station needed to fill in the lost power gap. To do this effectively, two retired units at the facility had to be converted from generators to synchronous condensers. However, there were several obstacles including multiple original equipment manufacturers, size adjustments that required substantial modifications and the age of the turbines. Perhaps the most pressing challenge of all was the timeline – the new system had to be up and running by June 2013. Solution Together with Origin Energy, Siemens engineered and built a monitoring and support center that decentralized the vast network of power generation units and enabled one of the world’s largest centralized fleet control systems. The new system raised the efficiency across Origin Energy’s 8 plants and 22 generating units. * Barker, G. (2013, December). The Generation Fleet at Origin‘s Fingertips. Living Energy, No. 9, 24-29. Solution The team at AES partnered with Siemens Energy. With the tight timeline being the most critical factor, the Siemens team made the decision to adapt to the current facility rather than bring in a lot of new equipment. Most of the existing infrastructure was retained. The only new equipment were the pieces needed most, such as pony motors, thrust bearings, variable frequency drives and new distributed control system panels. On June 28, 2013, the converted system was successfully started and has been a reliable source of power for Southern California ever since.
