Smarter Solutions for
Today’s Networks
The days of traditional, linear electricity generation are
behind us; energy production in today’s world is more
complex and multi-dimensional than ever before. As societies
move away from the dependency on traditional fossil-based
sources and incorporate distributed power generation and
renewable energy like wind and solar, they must also
maintain a reliable and efficient power supply to meet
growing consumer demand. Siemens provides a full range
of solutions designed to help you better manage and
optimize the rapidly increasing complexity of electrical
generation environments.
Beyond Energy Management
Siemens Smart Generation Solutions do more than simply
manage your power generation. We optimize it – delivering
stability to the grid and peace of mind to the people who
manage diverse electricity supply. Our solutions are a
comprehensive suite of services designed to optimize the
generation and supply of electricity, regardless of the
complexity of the system. Together, these services deliver a
range of features, from yield forecasting and data analytics
to distributed generation integration and energy storage
solutions. The suite of Smart Generation Solutions includes:
• Renewable Energy and Storage Integration
• Energy Storage Grid Optimization
• Storage and Fossil Generation Integration
• Performance Monitoring and Optimizing Software
Why Smart Generation Is a
Smart Choice
• Single-source solution for reliable power supply
• Peace of mind to all levels of power plant personnel
• Increased generation reliability and enhanced
power quality
• Economic efficiencies, including Levelized Cost
of Energy (LCoE)
• Improved resource efficiency and reduced
operations cost
• Emphasis on sustainability/climate protection,
reduced emissions
• Flexible solutions – we’ll work with you
to find the right fit for your power needs
Smart Generation – A Closer Look
The Added Value of Siemens
Renewable Energy and Storage Integration
Siemens offers total solutions for all your hybrid power
needs, complete with planning, engineering, installation and
commissioning, and service. This comprehensive
management system ensures reliable power supply with high
grid stability and power quality with the use of integrated
energy storage. Renewables such as wind and solar can be
smoothly incorporated into existing diesel generation
systems, reducing emissions and fuel expenses up to 60%.
Storage and Fossil Generation Integration
Siemens provides intelligent solutions for bundling fossil
and renewable energy sources. By strategically combining
distributed generation units and storage, Siemens can
reduce the complexity of managing your grid and lower
maintenance costs across the board.
When you choose Siemens, you are selecting an industry
leader in power generation and power management
solutions. We are the leading provider of power generation
automation and electrical solutions that actually builds,
operates and maintains power plants, and we leverage that
expertise to meet your needs.
Performance Monitoring and Optimizing Software
Siemens SPPA-T3000 software converts big data into cuttingedge yield forecasting that optimizes your plant’s efficiency.
Our power plant automation solutions offer innovative new
fleet control applications to help you look at renewable
generation and track performance remotely. A common
control center interconnects distributed power plants for
optimal efficiency. The monitoring software is included in
all Smart Generation Solutions.
• More than 300 local engineers and a global network
of power industry experts support Siemens. We also have
strategically located manufacturing and testing facilities
throughout the U.S. This offers distinct competitive advantages
through product innovation and process optimization.
• We deliver customized solutions in less time.
Energy Storage Grid Optimization
Siemens offers a full range of highly customizable solutions
that minimize third-party supply while centralizing operation
and automation procedures. Our flex solutions include
synchronous condenser applications and black start
capabilities. Whether your application includes a single
power plant or an entire fleet, Siemens solutions promote
increased profitability and grid reliability while remaining
flexible and transparent.
• 24/7 technical support with comprehensive services
- Specialists to assist in the selection and use of
field instruments
- State-of-the-art software for effective plant engineering
and order processing
- Installation and commissioning support and/or supervision
- Comprehensive after-sales service and training
Additionally, when you choose to partner with Siemens, you
have one of the industry’s leading organizations behind you.

Real-World Applications
Monitoring Center Unites Vast
Australian Fleet*
Stabilizing the California Grid Quickly
and Efficiently
Challenge
Origin Energy, Australia’s leading energy provider, had a
huge job of supplying energy to the southeastern portion
of a country defined by enormous distances – 4,000 square
kilometers – between cities and towns known for
unpredictable, sometimes extreme, weather. The power
generation sources range from combined cycle gas and
coal to wind and hydroelectric, separated by vast distances.
Supplying reliable power every day to more than 4 million
customers was a huge engineering challenge.
Challenge
In 2012, Southern California lost a source of dependable
power generation when the San Onofre Nuclear Generating
Station was shut down. AES Huntington Beach Power
Generating Station needed to fill in the lost power gap.
To do this effectively, two retired units at the facility had to
be converted from generators to synchronous condensers.
However, there were several obstacles including multiple
original equipment manufacturers, size adjustments that
required substantial modifications and the age of the
turbines. Perhaps the most pressing challenge of all was
the timeline – the new system had to be up and running
by June 2013.
Solution
Together with Origin Energy, Siemens engineered and built
a monitoring and support center that decentralized the vast
network of power generation units and enabled one of the
world’s largest centralized fleet control systems. The new
system raised the efficiency across Origin Energy’s 8 plants
and 22 generating units.
* Barker, G. (2013, December). The Generation Fleet at
Origin‘s Fingertips. Living Energy, No. 9, 24-29.
Solution
The team at AES partnered with Siemens Energy. With the
tight timeline being the most critical factor, the Siemens
team made the decision to adapt to the current facility
rather than bring in a lot of new equipment. Most of
the existing infrastructure was retained. The only new
equipment were the pieces needed most, such as pony
motors, thrust bearings, variable frequency drives and
new distributed control system panels. On June 28, 2013,
the converted system was successfully started and has been
a reliable source of power for Southern California ever since.
