However, the days of easy oil and gas are over, and more technology per barrel is required if production is to keep pace with demand in an environmentally sound way. Therefore, oil and gas producers around the world are focusing their attention on technically demanding onshore reservoirs, on unconventional resources, on deepsea fields, and – next – on fields in arctic regions. This is where installing facilities is a challenge in itself. Safety, efficiency, and technical reliability are of prime importance, because servicing offshore and especially deep-sea facilities requires a lot of effort. Siemens provides the answers for these challenges based on its leading technological expertise in electrical engineering, power generation, transmission and distribution, rotating equipment, automation, and water treatment. For all types of mobile units and jack-up rigs, Siemens delivers proven solution packages that ensure reliable operation and availability – from power supply (including fault-tolerant systems) through drives for all applications to automation and management systems. Floating production, storage, and offloading vessels (FPSOs) call for an integrated design of all topside solutions as well as highest availability and operational efficiency. We can provide this, thanks to our comprehensive lifecycle services, our cuttingedge technologies, and our wealth of experience in furnishing offshore drilling and production facilities. For subsea applications, Siemens offers products and solutions for power, distribution, control, processing, and surveillance. Siemens also combines a high focus on R&D and broad experience with subsea power concept studies as well as marinization expertise in deep-sea transformers, switchgear, variable-speed drives and subsea power control. Our commitment: High quality – high reliability The Siemens Subsea Power Grid is based on our proven, high-quality industrial components: transformers, switchgear, and variable-speed drives. These power components can be installed on a common base frame distributed at the seabed – and all components in the Siemens Subsea Power Grid are retrievable. Full flexibility and reliability The power electronics and most of the active components are installed in an oil-filled and pressure-compensated environment. This leads to optimal cooling conditions with 100 % natural cooling by convection, supporting reliability and reducing complexity. Built-in redundancy provides increased availability of the total system. Vacuum circuit breakers with very high MTBF values are installed in one-atmospheric SF6-filled pressure vessels. Monitoring for the best performance Dedicated power-management and performance monitoring ensures cost savings, extension of the system’s service life, and reduced maintenance costs. To guarantee maximum availability, an integrated condition monitoring system will monitor the integrity of the power grid, evaluate changes and predict f ailure situations before leading to unexpected shut downs. Operational key data will be stored, enabling the optimization of operations. « Key facts about the Siemens Subsea Power Grid’s design ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ Scalable/flexible Designed and qualified for 3,000-meter water depth Oil-filled and pressurized Natural cooling No differential pressure on penetrations/connectors Reliable: 30-year design life Condition monitoring Universal and redundant control system The Siemens Subsea Power Grid components Subsea switchgear ■■ Modular design with vacuum circuit breakers ■■ Fluid-filled base module ■■ Pressure-compensated bus bar base section ■■ Cascadable design for more consumers ■■ Zero differential pressure at all penetration to seawater ■■ ■■ ■■ ■■ 3AC 50/60 Hz 36 kV 2000 A main busbar current 500 A feeder current 5 Siemens at OTC 2013 | The Siemens Oil & Gas newsletter Variable-speed drive (VSD) ■■ Multicell topology with built-in cell redundancy ■■ Fluid-filled and pressure-compensated power electronics ■■ 100 % natural cooling by convection ■■ Designed for 3000 meters water depth ■■ Condition monitoring High-power changeover switch (HPCS) Siemens’ HPCS is specially designed sures that the power switch remains for connecting two redundant subin the same position if hydraulic sea ESPs to one common power um- pressure is lost (“fail as-is”). bilical and power supply. Such solutions are exactly what Siemens has to offer – based on broad expertise in electrical, instrumentation, and telecommunication (EIT), rotating equipment, and water treatment solutions, as well as years of hands-on experience in the oil and gas business and marine applications. Siemens’ scope of supply covers the entire lifecycle of equipment and assets, thus ensuring long-term reliability and ideal investment protection. Moreover, thanks to long-standing business partnerships with leading shipyards, naval architects, and drilling service operators, Siemens understands the needs and demands of the markets – and how to deliver exact solutions. DP3 closed ring solution Power management is of vital importance for dynamic positioning. Failures in the power system components or external faults should be identified when they occur and be isolated from the rest of the system. A system operating in DP3 mode in closed ring configuration does this. And in case of malfunction of the primary safeguarding devices, a backup system will be put in operation. Siemens has worked with drilling majors and the classification society to develop solutions operating in DP3 mode with one fully integrated power system. Our solution will additionally result in a reduction of fuel demand (about 5 %), operating with only two engines online and working on higher power utilization to achieve 17 to 23 percent fewer operating hours on engines, resulting in several advantages: ■■ Lower emissions ■■ Reduced contamination of the engines ■■ Diesel engines running at a higher load level ■■ Improved selectivity in the main power system ■■ Improvements for the maintenance program of the vessel BlueDrive drilling rig power system For drilling jack-up rigs our new topology for the electrical system connects the generators directly to the DC bus via rectifier. There is no need for synchronization between generators and it allows load sharing. This new power solution can be combined with existing drilling and jacking drives and various power sources. It results in advantages in construction, operation, and maintenance, including these effects: ■■ Reduced weight (fewer switch boards and transformers) and size ■■ Ultra-fast engine startup ■■ Ultra-fast blackout prevention and reduced recovery time ■■ Lower noise for the crew ■■ Reduced fuel consumption ■■ Lower wear and tear BlueDrive jacking drives Siemens has developed an electrical variable-speed drive jacking system that can significantly speed up the jacking process. Its unique diagnostic systems give precise data feedback during operation, which allows optimal speed and torque control as well as synchronization. This helps reduce the possibility of mechanical overstress and wear of the legs, and makes the need for system-overrating a thing of the past. The new Siemens BlueDrive jacking drives thus make possible higher efficiency, time savings, costoptimization, and improved investment protection. What is more, the new BlueDrive jacking drives also help save energy, as less power and less cooling capacity are required. BlueDrive thruster drives Siemens has introduced an AC drive system specially designed for propulsion applications, which ensures the safe and reliable operation of the vessel under all conditions. Particular effort has been made to ensure reliable handling of both the dynamics within the power supply system and the various load conditions at sea. The BlueDrive system comes with a fast-responding blackout prevention system, and is capable of pre-charging. It can, therefore, be regarded as a non-heavy consumer. Its compact converters minimize footprint, and thereby costs, and the system’s separate transformers ensure the utmost flexibility in the choice of mounting locations, thus saving up to 30 percent in space and reducing power loss in the electrical room by as much as 50 percent. « 7 Siemens at OTC 2013 | The Siemens Oil & Gas newsletter Offshore Production: Solutions for highest reliability and availability A good portion of the global oil and gas reserves are to be found offshore.
