This goal was modified through th€ acquisition of the SUN network and the selling
of the Tower. I am now a regular user of the UNIX operating system on the SUN
network and have developed a much grsater expertise in the use ot UNIX. I also
taught the CSCI 352 course uslng the Tower and UNIX in the Spflng semester.

I continued to enjoy success in my teaching this year. Contributing grea y to
thrs was the cgntinued decline in class sizes, making effective teaching possible,
Also adding to my effectiveness was that I taught no courses for the first time
d u r i n g t h e y e a r . S t u d e n t r a t i n g s o f n y t e a c h i n g c o n t i n u e dt o b e h i g h . I w a s
p a r t r c u l a r l yp r o u d o f t h e C S C I 2 8 3 c j a s s i n t h e F a j 9 B 7 i n w h i c h e v e r y 6 t u d e n t
gave me an overall rating of A in splte of the fact that I gave rather low grades

The first and third are special courses needed for the
preparation of secondary teachers while the second is a preparation for graduate

Scholarship
I continued to be active in the review of proposals, papers, and books.
In
addttion, I attended two major national conferences, attended a summer \4orkshop,
and did consulting laork with Parke-oavis and Heinz. I aiso signed a contract
w i t h W a d s w o r t h t o b e g i n w o r k o n a P r o g r a m mn g L a n g u a g e s t e x t b o o k a n d t a r o t e
two chaoters for that book.
Serv ice
I served as chair of the Computer Services Committee and Camoqs llalson to the
Oak Ridge Science Semester during the Spring semeeter ahd served as program
chair for a majo. national professional meeting in addition to editing the
proceedingsof that meeting. i have aiso been servtng as the chair of a GLCA
conference on the teaching of Computer Science to be held In March, t9BB.
