Brink Teaching: Herb is a superb teacher. I donrt think that anyone in the Nlflidl3cieirces Division surpasses hirD in this regard. Students gave him alnost all A's olr the Math evaluation form. Written commentsby studelts were all complimentary. Herb tells me that he has never served as a teacher consultant l think we have missed an opportunity here. He has much to offer young faculty members who wish to improve their teaching perfomance. I rate his teaching this past year as excellent to exceptional Advising: Herb had a normal load of advisees, most of whom were maiors, ana-wii a conscientious, effective advisor' He has been responsible for establishjng a formal advising program for majors that should be examined as a campus-wide nodel, I rate his advising as excellent scholarship: Herb was active in the review of proposals, papers, and -Ee boo-Fs. continued to consult with Parke-Davis and ilitiated work ir I rate his scholarship as fair-good artificial ilteligence. Service: Herb had a rnajor colunittee assignment as chair of the Computer SEiiiEE Cornmitteein addition to a number of service projects that were of shorter duration. The quality of hls service work was very good. I rate his service as good to excellent. Chairpersons Duties: Herb is an excellent chairperson, who works well wIiF-ECT;uIiv to assist them in their teaching and professional activily. He piovides solid leadership in developing the curriculum and the profesHe sional direction of his department, Planning is one of his strengths job a PhD of recruiting Mi]{e Jipping, did a particutarly outstanding Assistant Professor frorn the University of lowa, who will join the Hope facutty in the FalI of 198?. He worked at this for several years, carefully maintaining contacts with Jipping and urging him to cast his ]ot with Hope. I rate his perfordrance as chair this past year as excellent.
