While virtual desktop solutions such as Wyse allow for economies of scale for lowdensity environments like email, the Avocent HMX High Performance KVM system allows
economies of scale for performance and graphics capabilities, such as those required
when using the Dell Precision Workstations.
The Avocent HMX High Performance KVM solution for training centers and simulators
enables organizations to deliver training more effectively by separating distracting
equipment from students. You can locate workstations, like the Dell Precision R5500 or
T5500, outside of the learning environment, without reducing training effectiveness or the
user experience. You can move workstations and other IT equipment to a single location for
centralized maintenance and improved physical security. Collaboration between instructors
and students happens in real time.
The Avocent HMX High Performance KVM solution is often used in classrooms and
simulations including military, commercial flight and maritime applications where realtime, high-definition video or CPU-intensive performance is required and no degradation in
performance is permissible.
Because the solution allows IT equipment to be separated
from the learning environment, instructors and designers
are able to design and implement fully immersive
classrooms and simulations, dramatically improving

The Market

conducting personnel training. It allows students to mimic a realworld experience without the associated costs of fuel or additional
equipment and without exposing personnel to risk.
Whether simulating the bridge of a destroyer, the cockpit of a fighter
jet or the mission-critical command center of a nuclear power plant,
the Avocent® HMX High Performance KVM solution allows instructors
and designers the maximum amount of flexibility as they create the
most realistic training environment possible.
The Avocent HMX High Performance KVM system remotely delivers
real-time, high-definition videos and applications that require
significant processing power, regardless of where workstations
and other IT equipment are located in the training area. It ensures
simulations are effective without causing any degradation in
performance.
The Application
In the simulation and training applications, the Avocent HMX High
Performance KVM solution allows instructors to create immersive
learning and simulation environments while completely eliminating
the distance limitations that require workstations and IT equipment to
be in the simulation environment.
That means a student receives the same control experience and
immersion that a real-world situation would provide—without dealing
with heat, noise and other inconveniences brought by the proximity
to IT equipment. Using only a small user station (about the size of a
paperback book) to extend the workstation, the simulation designer has
the freedom to create an exact replica of the real-world environment.
Furthermore, instructors can be located away from the simulation
environment while monitoring students’ progress by sharing their
screens on-demand, taking control of the student system from a
distance or forcing the feed of any Avocent HMX transmitter onto a
video screen or wall.
The Avocent HMX High Performance KVM solution relies on standard
DVI or VGA and USB connections, thereby providing the flexibility of
standard PC, Linux, Unix or Macintosh compatible infrastructure as
the basis of the simulator, while significantly enhancing physical and
operational security. The software that powers these simulations can
be run on servers in a centralized data center—removing equipment
from the environment and preventing any type of unauthorized
access or tampering with the software by students or third parties.
The Avocent HMX High Performance KVM system can restrict USB
vMedia access to prevent industrial espionage or inadvertent malware
infection of the simulation environment.
