Renovations at the RJ Reynolds Center Some changes are in the planning phases for improving the look and feel of the RJ Reynolds Center, the home of the School of Business and Economics. The changes are being financed by Title III and are part of the same grant that enabled the SBE to construct the state-ofthe-art Finance Lab that officially opened in March of this year. The remaining funds of that grant have been earmarked for upgrading faculty offices and for making modifications to the configuration of space so that all tenure-track faculty will be able to have private offices. In some instances, large spaces that have been shared by two faculty members will be divided. Entrances to some offices will be created, so that no office will have to be accessed by going through another. Room 127, which previously housed a faculty lounge and, later, the Center of Excellence in Financial Services, is a large space that will be divided into several private offices. Plans were developed for the renovations in early 2013. Architects have verified the plans and now the engineering must be done, approvals must be obtained, and the project must be put out for bid. The plans will have to be reviewed and approved by the State Construction Office. Construction will begin the first part of July and this should be completed by August 1. The project is being managed by Ms. Donna Presnell of Facilities Management. Commenting on the project, Ms. Presnell said, “Our latest undertaking is taking the shared office spaces in the RJ Reynolds building and dividing them into smaller private offices for tenured and tenure-track faculty. This allows faculty the privacy needed to meet with students and to conduct research which leads their becoming more successful in their respective fields.” FOCUS is published weekly by the School of Business and Economics at Winston-Salem State University. A Message from Dean Jessica Bailey The first summer session is more than half completed and there is an undercurrent of activity in the Reynolds Center. Students have been studying and preparing out-of-class assignments in the corridors as a means of escaping the heat and the stormy weather. Both graduate and undergraduate classes continue to be held during the day and in the evening throughout the building. Last week, Rise Display worked with WSSU staff to ensure the coordination of hall monitors so that information can be made available to the students at four locations on the first level—outside of Room 136, east of the SBE Finance Lab, outside of Room 109, and in the lobby outside Room 100. The coordination of these monitors will be completed prior to the beginning of fall semester. Faculty and administrators continue to attend meetings, workshops, and retreats during the summer in preparation for the return of students. Such topics as strategic planning, assessment, faculty and staff benefits, leadership development, and modification of staff position descriptions are completed during this time of year. Please remember to stop and view the SBE Finance Lab. A lot of work is being accomplished, but how time flies in summer! Jessica Bailey
