A Message from Dean Jessica Bailey
WSSU is off to a rousing start at the
beginning of fall 2013. People are remarking
that the campus has never appeared more
vibrant and diverse than it is this semester.
Students fill the RJ Reynolds
Center from morning to night
studying, working in teams,
reading, and making their
electronic connections.
The School of Business
and Economics is blessed to
have classes that are
Dr. Jessica Bailey
overflowing with students
who are matriculating
towards degrees in business; these degrees
will help them secure careers in business
that will be both lucrative and fulfilling. This
semester, the faculty members of the SBE
are focusing on sharpening their skills as
advisors for the business majors, as well as
freshmen and sophomores. We realize that
advising goes far beyond just enrolling
students in classes. It entails having
discussions with students to discern their
interests, career aspirations, and special gifts
and challenges. Only then, can a faculty
member advise a student on the ideal path to
success for them to pursue.
Though advising can be time consuming,
that does not deter the SBE faculty from
investing in getting to know our students
and being willing to mentor them whenever
it is needed. We understand that, often, the
difference between success and failure in a
student’s academic career is having someone
to talk to who really cares. This is the kind
of attention that we seek to give to the
students of the SBE.

SBE Welcomes New Professor—Dr. Qingxin He
Dr. Qingxin He (pronounced ChingSheen Huh), recently arrived in WinstonSalem following the 2013 completion of
her Ph.D in Economics from North
Carolina State University. Her
dissertation, “Three Essays on Market
Structure: An Analysis of Price
Discrimination and Marketable
Byproducts,” looks at the US-China
international flight market and the
variance in pricing structure between
those offered to the general public and
deeply discounted pricing which is only

frequently to the homes of aunts and
uncles. There she gained a bit of a
traveler’s spirit at a very young age,
seeing many of the provinces in eastern
and northern China where they lived.
The end result was a lifelong comfort
with packing and going and getting to
know new places and people.
Dr. He is very happy to be young
enough to have missed the terrible
cultural revolution that concluded with
the rational reforms of Chairman Deng
(Xiaoping Deng) that moved the entire
country toward a much more logical
economic development. In the mid1980’s, the Chinese people began to get
