The graduation of so many young people is quite an accomplishment and we all should be proud. As part of our FOCUS format for the summer months, we want to let our readers know where our graduates are being employed and what careers they are pursuing. This information will keep the SBE family in touch with their peers Dr. Jessica Bailey and will allow employers to know the quality of our graduates. We encourage all graduating seniors, MBAs and MHAs to let us know if you have accepted a position recently. First, masters degree students were hooded by their deans. Then, the names of undergraduate degree recipients were read and they walked across the stage to receive their degrees from Chancellor Reaves. Last, two graduates were commissioned as officers in the U.S. military. After the Alumni Induction of the Class of 2013 and the singing of the Alma Mater, the ceremony concluded. The rainy weather could not dampen the joy following that wonderful celebration. FOCUS News Page 2 Graduates Honored at SBE Awards Celebration The families and friends of May 2013 graduates of the School of Business and Economics gathered with them at the Hawthorne Inn on Friday, May 17, to celebrate this milestone in their lives. The event was presided over by Dr. Suresh Gopalan, SBE Associate Dean and featured individual recognitions and gifts for the graduates. The event included an evening buffet banquet, followed by the awarding of special recognitions of students who had distinguished themselves during their matriculations at WSSU. The three department chairs of the SBE awarded certificates to students who deserved special recognition in their departments and Dean Jessica Bailey distributed plagues to the students with the highest GPA’s in each of the majors. Two students who were double majors received the awards for the highest academic achievement— Mr. Agoro and Dr. Madjdj Sadjadi Alexis White, for both Accounting and Management Information Systems, and Almaroof Agoro, for Economics and Finance. Lindsay Willis was recognized for the highest GPA in Business Administration, Daniell Goodrich for Management and Sadé Powell for Marketing. The event concluded with words of wisdom from the dean. She encouraged the students to value their degrees and to make the world a better place. Also, she asked the graduates to reflect upon building an appreciation for depth over superficiality, as well as an appreciation for silence. The celebration was a truly joyous occasion. Faculty Research—Dr. Nikolaos Karagiannis Dr. Nikolaos Karagiannis was recently notified that his work, co-authored with Dr. Zagros MadjdSadjadi, “Crime, criminal activity and tourism performance: Issues from the Caribbean,” published in Worldwide Hospitality and Tourism Themes (Vol. 4, no.1, 2012) has been chosen as a Highly Commended Award Winner at the Literati Network Awards for Excellence 2013. This honor, places their work among only four selected from the reviewed works in 2012. The Emerald Literati Network, when referring to their work, called it one of the most impressive pieces of work the team has seen throughout 2012. The journal’s editorial team includes many eminent academics and practitioners. Dr. Karagiannis earned his Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Leeds in England in 1996. During the past 15 years, his main research interests have been in Economic Development Policy, Public Sector Economics/Fiscal Policy, and Macroeconomic Policy Analysis. He has emphasized the “strategic approach” to economic and industrial development at both theoretical and policy levels, and has examined the applicability of this view in different contexts (e.g., European Community/Union countries, Caribbean small island economies, North African countries, the United States) during this challenging era of globalization. He has authored, coauthored, and co-edited 14 books (3 books have also been published as e -books). Some of the publishers he has worked with are international, well-known well-respected academic outlets: Lexington Books– Rowman & Littlefield Publishing Group, Edward Elgar, Ashgate, Routledge, and Palgrave-Macmillan. In addition, he has published an introductory Economics textbook adopted for use in the United States and The Bahamas (as well as other areas) with the major textbook publisher, McGraw-Hill. In addition, he has authored or coauthored over 60 refereed journal articles and book chapters. His papers have been published in distinguished and well-respected refereed journals with an international audience of circulation such as Social and Economic Studies (published by the Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Studies), Regional Development Studies (published by the United Nations Center for Regional Development), Tourism and Hospitality Planning & Development, International Journal of Contemporary Hospitality Management, Worldwide Hospitality and Tourism Themes, Nordic Journal of Latin American and Caribbean Studies (published by the University of Stockholm, Sweden), International Papers in Political Economy, Forum for Social Economics, Journal of North African Studies, International Journal of Business and Social Science, and RealWorld Economics Review. Other academic accomplishments and awards for Dr. Karagiannis have included service as a member of the McGraw-Hill and Palgrave -Macmillan Academic Advisory Boards; service as the Director of the WSSU Center for Economic Analysis since 2012 and as its Research Coordinator since 2010; work as the Managing Editor of the American Review of Political Economy and a reviewer for other distinguished and well-respected refereed journals. Karagiannis’ writings on economic development and modern state strategies and policies have been acknowledged and quoted by academics, students, policymakers and diplomats from around the world.
