Preparing the School for a Warm Welcome Back
The finalization of changes and
improvements to the School of Business

commencement of work on the
renovation and improvement of office
space has begun and will be complete
after the new semester begins. In
addition, we have added two lobby
monitors for the broadcast of SBE and
WSSU information.

SBE Leadership Attends Academic Affairs Retreat
The 2013 Academic Affairs Retreat was
held by the Office of Provost at the Old Salem
Visitors Center Tuesday, August 6 and
Wednesday, August 7 and was attended by
members of the Deans’ Council, the Provost’s
Council, and the Academic Council, which
includes key individuals within the Division
of Academic Affairs, academic deans, and
department chairs. SBE representatives
included Drs. Moula Cherikh, Joel Kincaid,
Sharon White and Jessica Bailey.
Tuesday morning began with a
continental breakfast. Following a welcome
and introduction by Provost Brenda Allen,
the assemblage divided into two groups for
two separate presentations by noted
academic consultants. Members of the
Deans’ Council attended a thought-provoking
presentation by Dr. Joseph P. Zolner entitled,
“Acknowledging the Past While Looking to
the Future.” Zolner, a lecturer on education
and Senior Director of the Harvard Institutes
for Higher Education, led a lively discussion
on re-framing organizations. Members of the
leadership team of the Deans’ Council were
able to assess their levels of engagement
along four of necessary frames for effective
organizational leadership—structural,
human resource, political, and symbolic. The
exercise was enlightening and revealing
about the leadership strengths and
weaknesses that exist within the group.
The remaining attendees were the
audience for a lively presentation by Dr.
Jamie Washington, President and Founder of
the Washington Consulting Groups, a
multicultural organizational development
firm, entitled “Building Capacity to Foster
Diversity and Inclusion as an HBCU.”
Members of the Provost’s Council and the
Academic Council heard an introspective
seminar that examined the problems facing
historically Black institutions as they grapple
with the issue of race on their campuses.
Following lunch, the entire group
reassembled for a special session entitled,
“Role of Leadership in Building a Strategic
Diversity Plan, one designed to address some
of the unique issues facing Winston-Salem
State University today.
The morning of the second day of the
retreat was devoted to discussion of the
2013-2014 strategic direction of WSSU and
this year’s priorities. Also discussed was the
mission review and revision process, the
2013 legislative session, and the budget for
the coming academic year. After a luncheon
session, participants from the morning and
the previous day were dismissed and
members of the Chancellor’s Executive Staff
(vice-chancellors and other senior
leadership) had the opportunity to hear Dr.
Washington’s session on building capacity.
Attendees agreed that the retreat was a
valuable experience.
