Mary Rottschafer: Critter Barn
Mary Rottschafer is founder and Executive Director of the Critter Barn Educational Farm in Zeeland,
MI. Mary’s life had been devoted to music, church staff ministry, teaching elementary school, and
raising three wonderful children. She also involved herself with gardening, dog obedience work, and
outdoor projects related to life sciences. However, her dream was to study animal science and
pursue a veterinarian career. She graduated from Hope College.
In 1984, her family purchased a remnant of a former dairy farm, which gave birth to a small
hobby farm via her church choir’s assistance and a practical joke. In 1990, several requests from
educational colleagues set the course to develop a field trip destination for area schools, which led to
the beginning of the Critter Barn. Through classes, field trips, public hours and traveling farm, the
Critter Barn touches the lives of over 50,000 people annually.
Professional affiliations include Ottawa County Farm Bureau, Michigan Farm Bureau Promotion
& Education, Michigan Allied Poultry Industries, National Association of Interpreters, American
Dairy Goat Association, Colored Wool Growers Association, Michigan Sheep Breeders
Association, Michigan Farm Market & Ag Tourism Association.
Mary continues to train volunteers and staff, teach field trips, assist with fundraising events,
promotion and education for the farm, and handles the husbandry care of the animals. She
continues to develop activity based curriculum, works on documentation and researches
farming trends through professional opportunities and visits other farm operations. It is our
dream to see this model grow and collaborate with organizations in other locations to bring
more education to people around the country.

SERVICE
HASP Service Committee - Volunteer Opportunities
1. Our first project for OAR, Inc (Ottagan Addictions Recovery) was held on June 9. We had almost
20 people who divided into teams and collated, stapled, sorted, punched, stamped, addressed, and
stuffed all kinds of things in their office. We also heard Rich Campbell, the Executive Director talk
about the goals and mission of OAR. It was a very successful initial session.
Now we are in the planning stage for another similar session which will probably take place in
September. We are planning to expand the orientation to OAR in this session. If you are interested in
joining this project, please contact Elsa Hyde, 994-9787, grandmachicago7@yahoo.com. She will be
very happy to hear from you.
2. We are planning on helping with registration and packet pickup for the Millennium Triathlon Event
on Friday August 12th from 2-8pm. The races are the following day, Saturday, August 13th at
Millennium Park in Grand Rapids. This event is in support of the CAC (Children’s Advocacy Center)
which is a sponsored agency of our committee. If you are interested in helping with this project, Max
Murphy would love to know about it. Please contact him at 994-0350, maxmurphy01@charter.net.
3. There is an opportunity for individual volunteers:
CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) of Ottawa County is seeking volunteers to participate in an
upcoming training. CASA volunteers advocate for children that are in the Family Court process due to
abuse and neglect. A CASA volunteer is appointed by the judge to gather information, write reports
and make recommendations to the court as to the best interest of children. CASA strives to help
expedite safe and permanent placement for children. There are presently 15 volunteers serving 20
children in Ottawa County. Many more children need a voice in court. Be the difference.
The upcoming training will be held this fall. CASA is presently interviewing potential volunteers. A
CASA volunteer must:

be 21 years of age or older with a high school diploma or G.E.D.

clear a criminal background check

carry current car insurance and have a good driving record

have strong written and verbal communication skills

attend 30 hours of initial training

provide a minimum of 12 hours of case activity per month

commit to at least one case completion (can be from 6 months to 2 years)

have a strong commitment to acting in the best interest of children
If you would like more information or would like an application, please contact Sheryl Brink at 616396-2301 ext. 130, or sbrink@pathwaysmi.org.
SPECIAL EVENTS
There is still room for the U.P trip and it is now open to guests!
UPPER PENINSULA ADVENTURE, Monday-Thursday, July 18 – 21, 2011
Join your HASP colleagues for an exciting trip to the UP. We will stay three nights in Manistique and
travel from there on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Points of interest:
FAYETTE HISTORIC TOWNSITE, once a bustling industrial community that manufactured pig iron
between 1867 and 1891, is located on the Garden Peninsula. Fayette offers visitors the unmatched
serenity of a Lake Michigan Harbor, white dolomite bluffs and verdant forests. This well-preserved
museum village recalls another time when it was a noisy, dirty company town with an immigrant
population that shared daily hardships, joys and sorrows. This stop will involve walking, some on
uneven ground if you are adventurous.
BIG SPRING, KITCH-ITI-KIPI, 200 feet across and forty feet deep, is Michigan’s largest spring.
Over 16,000 gallons a minute gush from fissures in the underlying limestone. We will travel across
the spring by means of a covered self operated observation raft.
SEUL CHOIX POINT LIGHTHOUSE PARK & MUSEUMS – Hundreds of years ago, Native
Americans and French fur traders traveled in canoes across the rough waters of Lake Michigan. On
one occasion, a group of French sailors were caught in a terrifying storm which forced them to seek
shelter. They landed on the rocky shore of a harbor and found refuge in the bay while waiting out the
storm. Before leaving, they named the harbor Seul Choix, which translates to “Only Choice.”
PICTURED ROCKS BOAT CRUISE – The crystal clear blue green waters of Lake Superior have
created masterpieces of colors and rock formations found nowhere else in the world. They are viewed
from the boat during the 2 ½ to 3 hour tour.
We will enjoy lunches in Mackinaw City, Fayette (picnic), Munising and, on the way home, at Legs
Inn in Cross Village, a delightful spot on Lake Michigan with interesting décor and specializing in
Polish cuisine. Dinners are in and around Manistique. Cost of the trip is $280 per person (double
occupancy), $377 per person (single occupancy) - all inclusive except for three breakfasts and one
dinner at the Three Seasons Café, adjacent to our motel, The Gray Wolf Lodge. The Lodge has Lake
Michigan access. There will be opportunities for sitting at the beach or taking a walk. Manistique
boasts a two mile boardwalk. Leave time from the Municipal Stadium is 8:00 a.m. on Monday, July
18, with arrival back in Holland late afternoon on Thursday, July 21.
GRAND RAPIDS ART PRIZE TOUR, Thursday September 22, 2011
Imagine visiting Grand Rapids to view Art Prize 2011 without having to worry about traffic or finding
a parking place. If you join the HASP Art Prize Tour you will travel via the Hope Bus to The Amway
Grand Hotel with your HASP friends, have time to walk to the downtown Art Prize sites, travel from
there to a private lunch at Mangiamo’s, then again go by bus to Meijer Gardens to view additional Art
Prize entries. The bus will depart Holland at 9:00 a.m. and return in the neighborhood of 4:30 p.m. The
cost per person is $20.00 and is due with your reservation.
