Bultman Hope College is a distinguished and distinctive four-year, liberal arts, undergraduate college, affiliated with the Reformed Church in America. Its great religious heritage is expressed through a dynamic Christian community of students and teachers vitally concerned with a relevant faith that changes lives and transforms society. As a liberal arts college offering education within the context of the historic Christian faith, Hope is a place of open inquiry, acceptance of intellectual challenge, rigorous engagement with hard questions, and vigorous but civil discussion of different beliefs and understandings. Hope enjoys a strong enrollment; its students and faculty regularly receive national recognitions and produce relevant and insightful publications; it has recently announced the A Greater Hope Campaign, the largest in the history of the college; and it consistently ranks as a top employer in West Michigan. However, there are challenges ahead in a changing landscape for higher education. It will require careful and strategic planning and a commitment to academic excellence to continue Hope’s legacy as a leading Christian liberal arts college. For the past twelve years, Hope College has been under the leadership of President Dr. James Bultman. Over these twelve years, the footprint of campus has expanded, the academic program has improved, and the financial health of the college has been strengthened. During this presentation, Dr. Bultman will share his thoughts on the current and future priorities of Hope and the challenges and opportunities facing the institution. He will lead a question and answer session following the presentation. Historic Churches of Holland, Thursday, February 9, 2012 The city of Holland is sometimes referred to as a city with “a church on every corner.” On Thursday, February 9, you will have an opportunity to visit four of the oldest churches in Holland to learn their history (how, when, why and by whom they were founded), to see and understand how their architecture and art relate to their beliefs and mode of worship, and to hear the music of their organ. Our mid-day meal will be enjoyed at the Methodist Church. Churches to be visited are Pillar Church (1847) led by Dr. Robert Swierenga, Graafschap Church (1857) led by Bill Sytsma and Cal Hoogstra, First United Methodist Church (1861) led by David Newton, and St. Francis DeSales (1883) led by Marilyn Torborg. The bus will leave the parking lot of Holland Municipal Stadium at 8:30 AM and return at 5:15 PM. Cost for the day will be $16.00 per person and reservations must be made by January 27th. Our lunch will be salad, assorted sandwiches and soup. Dinner with the Director and the Play AS IT IS IN HEAVEN, Thursday, February 23, 2012 On Thursday evening, February 23, 2012 at 6 p.m. H.A.S.P. members can enjoy a two-entrée-buffet meal at the Maas Center at Hope College. Director John Tammi will share insights about the play, AS IT IS IN HEAVEN. We will walk to the main theatre in the DeWitt Center and enjoy a thought provoking drama about the Shakers with lessons for us today. AS IT IS IN HEAVEN was written by Arlene Hutton (aka Beth Lincks) and premiered in 2001. It deals with life in the Shaker Community long after its founder Mother Ann Lee had died. In the settlement at Pleasant Hill, Kentucky several members of the United Society of Believers (Shaking Quakers too many) seem to be receiving messages from the late Mother Ann Lee and a revolution is initiated centering on authority, leadership and understanding the “will of God”. The package is $26/person payable with the reservation which must be made by February 8th, 2012. Questions can be directed to Williams@hope.edu. 3 HASP Office News ** In conjunction with the Hope College entire campus shut-down the HASP office will be closed Friday, December 23 – Monday, January 2, 2012. Here are some new opportunities for the spring semester. Please complete the form at the end of this article, drop it off at the HASP office or contact Elliot Tanis, 396-2228 or, better yet, tanis@hope.edu. 1. Professor Stein Slette (Kinesiology) will be teaching two biomechanics classes in the spring. In recent years they have switched the emphasis away from pure sports biomechanics to more of a musculoskeletal injury biomechanics. He is currently developing both lesson plans and labs to fit this new model and could definitely use some help from someone with a background in physics, modeling, and/or sports surgery (ideally all three). 2. Professor Amy Bade (Psychology) is teaching a Human Sexuality class next semester. She is interested in having a few couples attend her class to talk about their marriages and share “secrets of longevity” in their relationships. HASP volunteers would not have to prepare anything; it would be a question and answer session. Students might ask a question like "how important is sexuality in marriage? Etc" so participants might be prepared for that. The class meets Tuesday and Thursday, January 24 and 26, from 9:30-10:50. (Amy is Lou and Teresa DiGuiseppe's daughter.) 3. The Hope College Model United Nations will be holding their conference Thursday, March 8 and Friday, March 9, 2012. There is a need for judges on Friday, March 9, from 8:00 until around 4:00. (The volunteers will get a free lunch from Cook Servery.) The volunteers will be judges in the General Assemblies, which entails listening to debate and helping to decide the award winners. This year's topics for the Introductory General Assembly (IGA) are Reversing Global Warming and Regulation of Nuclear Energy Production. The topics for The Advanced General Assembly (AGA) are Sustainable Food Production and Security Council Reform. Information will be given to you prior to the event. 4. Professor James DeBoer (Music) would like some HASP volunteers to work with 5th grade to 10th grade students one on one with their primary instrument during rehearsal time at school. He appreciates the excellent effort of HASP members who regularly come to school today and work with their students. They have and continue to make a great impact on their learning. 5. Professor Deborah Van Duinen (Education) is teaching a Content Area Literacy course (for Secondary Education majors) where they talk about how notions of literacy have changed over time. She would like someone (or a panel of people - preferably with middle or high school related experiences) to share with them their changing experiences with literacy across the decades (i.e., how they were taught to read and write, how they might have taught reading/writing/content areas, how they see children being taught today). This class meets on Mondays and Wednesdays from 12-2:20. She would like HASP volunteers on either January 23 or January 25. 6. There will be 5 sections of Developmental Psychology so at least 25 volunteers will be needed. Details will be given next month. I am willing to volunteer (indicate the Professor/event). ___________________ _________________ _________________ _________________ Name_______________________________ Phone______________ e-mail__________________ 5
