Assistant Professor, Pediatrics
Assistant Professor, Internal Medicine
U of M Congenital Heart Center
C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital
This presentation will focus on his research and use of an “Implantable pressure sensor for use in congenital

families creates a spirit of gratitude for research, for medical schools and for life.

education at the University of Michigan graduating with a degree in Biology. In 2000, Wayne State University
awarded him a Doctor of Medicine Degree, with distinction. He continued with an internship in Internal
Medicine, Pediatrics and a Fellowship in Pediatric Cardiology. He is the recipient of many honors, awards and
has an extensive Bibliography.
Dr. Bocks has received many research fellowships in the area of Pediatric Cardiology. In addition to his
research he is a Clinical Assistant Professor in Internal Medicine, a Division of Cardiovascular Medicine.

Membership Memo – Applications and Introduction of New Members
We would like to clarify our application procedure. Applications are processed in the HASP office as they are
received. The membership committee receives the applications on the 10th of each month. We review them,
write the bulletin biographies, prepare nametags, send welcome emails to the new members and contact mentors
to let them know the person they have sponsored will be introduced at the next meeting. Applications received
after the 10th of the month are held until the following month. This streamlines paperwork for the office and
the committee. As a mentor, the person you are sponsoring will NOT be introduced until you have received a
letter from the committee. However, once the new member receives the HASP welcome packet from the office,
they may attend all monthly meetings and may sign up for classes and special events.

COMMUNICATIONS
Thank you to the HASP members who have already submitted writings and poems for the 2014 HASP Review.
However, we need many, many more for the 2014 issue that will be published next spring. Capture a bit of this
most recent summer—or one longer ago. What did you do when you were a kid, a teenager, a young parent, an
empty-nester, a grandparent? Did you see the hummingbird moth on the petunias in late August? Did you
listen to the cicadas, especially at night? Now that fall is here, what comes to mind—apple picking, pumpkin
carving, color changes? Have you observed the power of Lake Michigan? Who or what has played a
significant role in your life? Write about a little adventure or a big one. Share your experiences, your insights,
your humor. Our more than 600 HASP members have lived such rich lives. Each has a unique story to tell.
Share a bit of yours. Write a memory, a poem, a short story. Submit pictures, drawings, even a cartoon. We
look forward to your contributions.
SERVICE
Please see the article towards the end of the bulletin for “Opportunities for Volunteering in Hope
Classes”. There are many wonderful opportunities for us to serve Hope students and faculty! Please
contact Elliot Tanis, tanis@hope.edu, with questions.
Holland Museum and Cappon House/Settlers House In Need of Volunteers
The Service Committee has received a request for volunteers from Taylor Wise-Harthorn, Museum and Gallery
manager of the Holland Museum. Her primary need is docents and education docents for the Cappon House
and Settlers House. Requirements for becoming a docent include: (1) A one to two hours orientation including a
walk through of both homes, (2) monthly gallery training from 10 to 11/11:30 once a month on the third
Tuesday or Saturday, and (3) shadowing two different docents on two separate occasions (education docents
would need to shadow at least two education tours).
4
Both houses are open May through the fall from 12-4 PM on Fridays and Saturdays. Docent shifts are 4 hours
each day. Each docent is asked to volunteer at least 1-2 times each month. Currently there are 50/60 docents on
call for the Holland Museum and Cappon House and Settlers House, many of which are HASP members.
A history background is not required…just an interest in learning and a high level of enthusiasm! New docent
training begins monthly.
If interested please call Taylor direct at 796-2080 or email twiseharthorn@hollandmuseum.org.
