Randy Thelen, President, Lakeshore Advantage
A little less than one year ago, the greater Holland/Zeeland area was blessed with the
announcement that a multi-million dollar LG battery plant would be constructed in our
area, employing hundreds of local residents. This announcement was followed with the
visit of President Barak Obama for the formal grounding of the plant in July of 2010.
The project and visit was arranged and engineered by Lakeshore Advantage - the
economic development group representing the cities and townships within the
Holland/Zeeland area. Randy Thelen, President of Lakeshore Advantage, will be our
March 1st speaker. He will explain how Lakeshore Advantage was organized, funded
and their plan of action for future economic development in our area. He will discuss
their continued involvement to ensure this happens through cooperative efforts
involving our area educational systems, local businesses and each of our cooperating
governmental units.
The long-term impact of cooperative action will contribute greatly to our future wellbeing and should be of interest to each HASP member.
Upcoming Programs:
April – Eldon Greig, Climate Change
May – Joseph Byrd, Life of St. Francis of Assisi
June – Annual Luncheon and Business Meeting

COMMUNICATIONS
Don’t we all enjoy the excitement that comes from reading that new book, story, or article that has
really captured our attention? (You know, the one we can’t wait to get to with a cup of coffee or tea?)
Well, HASP each year has brought together a yearly review of all kinds of your writings from prose, to
memoirs to childhood stories. It’s a place where each of us can share with the whole community here,
but it doesn’t happen without you! Rachel N. Remen, M.D, the author of such books as My
Grandfather’s Blessings and Kitchen Table Wisdom tells us that, “everybody is a story,” so why not
take a part of your own story be it prose, poetry or even a list and share it? Write it out longhand, on a
yellow legal pad, or type it out and send it via email to HASP (hasp@hope.edu) or by mail to
Communications Committee c/o HASP office, 100 East 8th St., Holland, MI 49423.

Morton Arboretum – Wednesday, June 8, 2011
Come along with us for a day long visit to the former estate of Mr. Joy Morton (1855-1934), the estate
that he transformed into The Morton Arboretum in 1922. The Morton Arboretum located in Lisle, IL.
is a reflection of Mr. Joy Morton’s interest in the cultivation and preservation of the environment,
facets of which he learned from his father, the founder of Arbor Day and his mother, an avid gardener.
Mr. Joy Morton is the founder of the Morton Salt Company. A portion of their published mission
statement reads that the Arboretum “collects and studies trees, shrubs, and other plants from around the
world, to display them across naturally beautiful landscapes for people to study and enjoy….”
Our visit will start off with a one hour morning walking tour on paved paths narrated by their
knowledgeable guides highlighting conifers, plant collections, spring blossoms, and the area’s history,
all in close proximity to Meadow Lake. There are additional venues to explore, including the
children’s garden, the two acre maze garden, and a paved .6 mile path around Meadow Lake. A
special exhibit on Jens Jensen, the Chicago parks landscape architect, is being set up in June in the
nearby library. If you prefer, you can just relax in the Visitor’s Center, enjoy the Gingko Café, and the
Arboretum Store, featuring nature inspired jewelry, books, home and garden accents, and gifts for
children. Later, we will have lunch overlooking Meadow Lake. The afternoon will include an open
air tram tour, The Acorn Express, where one relaxes as we view all 1700 acres of the estate that
includes five lakes, marshes, forests, a prairie, and a major river. We will learn about their above
mentioned collection that includes 4,117 kinds of trees, shrubs, other plants from around the world,
and, in addition, the area’s natural history that includes events dating back to the glaciers that over ran
the area. The tour will also highlight the Morton family legacy, including a visit to the Founder’s
Room which was originally part of their former mansion, where we can observe displays of all four
generations of Morton’s.
A special exhibit has been announced that will open on May 19th……Nature Unframed: Art at the
Arboretum. The outdoor exhibit features eleven “renowned artists from around the world designing
their pieces specifically based on how they ‘read’ the unique landscape ‘galleries’ where the works
will be displayed”. We will view the exhibit during both our walking and tram tours!
Late in the day we will have dinner at the Public Landing Restaurant in the Gaylord Building (1838),
located in a park setting on the historic Michigan and Illinois Canal in Lockport, IL. We will be back
in Holland by 9:00 P.M. Mark your calendars for Wednesday, June 8, 2011, and sign up on the
attached trip reservation/menu selection form. We will leave from the Municipal Stadium parking lot
at 8:00 a.m. Sign-up is limited. The cost of the trip is $85 per person, due with your reservation form
to the HASP office. Brochures on the Morton Arboretum (mortonarb.org) are displayed on the Special
Events Bulletin Board/bookshelf at the HASP office.
Save the Date! A Shaw Theatre trip has been planned for Niagara on the Lake this fall. This is the
50th anniversary and they have selected some great plays to offer! The trip will be September 13-15,
2011. Watch your next bulletin for further details and registration.
