MONTHLY PROGRAM
Monthly Program Chair: Peter Deede, hpdeede@aol.com
Date:
Tuesday, August 4, 2015
Time:
9:00 AM refreshments, 9:30 AM program
Place:
Haworth Inn & Conference Center
Program:
A History of Abraham Lincoln in Song and Verse; Chris Vallillo
Abraham Lincoln in Song is a one man show created by award-winning folksinger and folklorist, Chris Vallillo to
celebrate the 200th Anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s birth. Extensively researched and historically accurate, the
program uses period music to look at our 16th President from a whole new angle.
The life of Abraham Lincoln spanned a period of change, growth and struggle in our young nation, and the music of his
era movingly characterizes these remarkable times. Vallillo uses Lincoln’s own words and stories, contemporary folk
music, and period songs to shed light on one of history’s most beloved figures — not only as a remarkable leader, but as a
man — who knew and loved many of these very songs himself. The show covers Lincoln’s life from his birth on the Big
South Fork of Nolan’s Creek in Kentucky in 1809 through his death in 1865 at the hand of John Wilkes Booth and lasts
approximately 1 hour and fifteen minutes.
Vallillo himself is a performer with an affinity for American roots music and a gift for translating historic topics into
modern day understanding. A former archaeologist turned folksinger/songwriter, he is a skilled multi-instrumentalist
whose love of the past evolved into a love for historic music. He is the Illinois State Scholar for the Smithsonian
Institution’s traveling exhibit on Roots Music New Harmonies.
Abraham Lincoln in Song has been performed at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum, the Abraham Lincoln
Home National Historic Site, the Gettysburg Battlefield National Museum, President Lincoln’s Cottage in Washington
DC and theaters and historic sites around the country to celebrate the bicentennial of Lincoln’s birth.
Chris Vallillo is a nationally acclaimed singer/songwriter and folk musician who makes the people and places of
“unmetropolitan” America come to life in song. Having spent the last 30 years in the rural Midwest, he has a natural
affinity for American roots music. Performing on six-string and bottleneck slide guitars and harmonica, Vallillo weaves
original, contemporary, and traditional songs and narratives into a compelling and entertaining portrait of the history and
lifestyles of the Midwest. Dirty Linen magazine described the music as, “vivid, original story songs” delivered with an
“eye for detail and a sense of history” while Folk Wax Magazine Editor, Arthur Wood said “Vallillo’s guitar playing
flows like warm honey and is a true aural delight.”
This program is funded in part by Michigan Humanities Council, an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

your reference: www.hope.edu/hasp
August Courses:
Please refer to your yellow calendar for the course schedule. We will only be publishing errors or changes to
the calendar.

The following summer courses are closed to further enrollment:
• Cutting the Cable, July 29
• Cuba: Recent Events, August 12
Artwork in the classroom: Diane Thornton will be the featured artists on display in the HASP classroom for
the month of August, featuring photos of HASP special event trips.
Your Fall 2015 curriculum calendar will be arriving in mid August!
Note from Curriculum Chair:
When you receive your copy of the HASP Monthly Bulletin for August, our summer term will be just about
over. We hope that it has been an enjoyable, interesting and stimulating term for those of you who have been
able to participate in the courses offered. Soon you will be receiving the course catalog for the fall term and
3
will no doubt need to make choices as to how much time you want to spend in the classroom. There are several
courses to choose from and just to whet your appetite; I would like to point out a few special and unique
opportunities.
In addition to the fall term presentations of “Great Decisions,” the Social Studies Committee is launching a
special series of courses called “Education Explorations.” These courses will be of great interest to many who
have had careers in education. Be sure to read more about this series elsewhere in the Bulletin. Also of great
interest will be a course given by one of our members on “The Magna Carta”which is being given to celebrate
and recognize its 800th anniversary.
The Humanities Committee is joining The Big Read of Holland with a class dedicated to the book chosen for
this year’s read, “The Things They Carried” by Tim O’Brien. Fine Arts has once again been able to coordinate
with the Special Events Committee by scheduling a class on “The Art of Ancient Egypt.” This course should be
helpful as a preparation for the November tour to the Grand Rapids Public Museum to see the special King Tut
exhibit. Finally, if you want to know “What’s New in DNA, or if you have ever wondered what happens to our
water “After the Flush,” you won’t want to miss the sessions on those subjects being planned by the Science,
Medicine and Technology Committee.

SERVICE
Tulip Time Trolley Guide TESTIMONIALS
This year I completed my 30th year as a Tulip Time volunteer. I have prepared and served meals, worked in an
information booth, and danced as a Dutch dancer. Due to foot surgery in January, I needed to find a new way to
contribute to Tulip Tome and decided to become a Tulip Time Trolley Guide.
Even though I have been a resident of Holland for over 40 years, I learned even more about the history of
Holland. It was fun meeting people from many areas of our country. They were very interested in hearing about
our history and seeing how our community has evolved. It was exciting to learn why people come to Holland
especially during Tulip Time. Visitors mentioned how fortunate we are to have an event like Tulip Time for our
community. My encounters with our visitors gave me a greater appreciation of the richness of our history and
community.

HASP ANNUAL BUSINESS MEETING MINUTES
HAWORTH INN AND CONFERENCE CENTER
June 2, 2015, 12 noon
President Doug Walvoord opened by greeting and welcoming HASP members to the meeting. He thanked the
Communications Committee and everyone who submitted articles/drawings/poetry for the annual HASP
Review and informed members to pick up one per household in the Atrium prior to leaving the luncheon. He
5
also acknowledged HASP member Andree Keneau for her creation of the HASP Review cover which was also
used as our program cover.
President Walvoord asked all past HASP presidents and charter members present to stand and be
acknowledged.
President Walvoord invited HASP member Jim Neevel forward to deliver our invocation.
Lunch was served.
2015 Business Meeting Minutes
President Walvoord called the meeting to order. Minutes of the June 3, 2014, meeting were printed in the
August 2014 bulletin and a copy was made available on each table. There was a motion to accept the June 2014
minutes, it was supported and the motion was carried.
The Treasurer’s financial report, along with a written annual report, was provided in the June 2015 monthly
bulletin and one copy was provided on each table. President Walvoord asked if there were any questions
regarding the financial reports and there were none. The report will be filed for audit. President Walvoord
reported that the audit will be conducted later this summer after the close of our fiscal year.
He then referenced the six standing committee reports which were also published in the June 2015 bulletin and
asked the membership if they had any questions for committee chairs and there were none.
Executive Director, Kim Mendels, came forward to deliver her report and a brief PowerPoint summary. She
provided the current values of our Endowment and two scholarship funds for which the college provides us with
quarterly reports. She reminded the membership that a 4.5% draw from our Endowment Fund supports our
rental/lease agreement for our classroom and office space and that is important for us to grow this fund in order
to keep membership and course fees low. She announced that an invitation to make a gift to this fund will be
included this year with annual dues notices.
In relationship to our two scholarships, she reported that this fall one of our recipients, Spencer Westley, has
agreed to work as an intern with HASP this fall for which he will receive a small stipend. We are excited to
offer our first internship to one of our scholarship students. Ms. Mendels reported that she attended internship
training through the Office of Career Services this past April and looks forward to the membership getting to
know Spencer better.
Ms. Mendels provided an overview of our annual operating budget. The operating budget for 2015-2016 is
$94,000.00 and was approved by the Board of Directors at their March meeting. To date, income for 20142015 is more than we anticipated due to an additional $2900.00 in dues income and just over $3,000.00 more
than budgeted in course fees. She thanked the membership for their strong support of enrollment in HASP
courses and the recruitment of new members.
Ms. Mendels then provided a few highlights of our year in review:
• 11 inspiring and informative monthly programs
• 12 engaging special events
• 665 members (membership has grown 46% over the last 10 years)
• 108 course offerings/268 sessions with an average of 50% leadership by HASP members and a 70%
HASP membership participation rate in courses
• 24th edition of the HASP Review with 39 members who contributed
• 175 volunteer spots filled for faculty requests
6
•
90 HASP volunteers in other service areas
Additionally, Ms. Mendels provided an update on college related projects, the Kruizenga Art Museum,
Performing Arts Center, and our relationship with Hope College. We continue to meet with college personnel
to better define our reciprocal relationship and how HASP will best fit into the larger strategic plan for Hope in
terms of space and services. Currently, HASP is not on the college’s organizational chart and we need to better
define our relationship so that we might be more intentionally recognized and represented in future planning.
She asked the membership is she could address any questions and there were none. She acknowledged and
thanked our Administrative Assistant, Amy Berarducci, for her faithful service and friendship.
Ms. Mendels and President Walvoord asked the membership to join in a time of silence as we remembered the
HASP members who have died this past year. We fondly remember their contributions to the Academy and
their friendship. President Walvoord read each of their names as Kim Mendels lit a candle for each deceased
member:
David VerLee
Louis Benes
Jacqueline Bakker
Robert Dorton
William Andresen
John Daly
Helena Winter

The candles remained lit for the duration of the business meeting.
Retiring Board members were then called forward for thanks and recognition:

Jack Hyde, Member at Large
Jerry Hurtgen, Member at Large (absent)
President Walvoord thanked them for their faithful service to the Academy and Board. Kim Mendels presented
