Time:

Program:
Sustainability: You and the Seventh Generation; Michelle Gibbs Director, Holland-Hope
College Sustainability Institute
The City of Holland, Hope College, and the Holland Board of Public Works developed the Sustainability
Institute to support outreach, education, and practices geared toward creating a more sustainable community.
Gibbs will explore: some of the key events and policies related to sustainability from the past fifty years; current
activities in our community; choices we can all make; and how these choices impact future generations and
people around the world.
Michelle Gibbs moved back to West Michigan in 2013 with her family after working in Wisconsin at Lakeshore
Technical College (LTC) as the Next Generation Energy Coordinator. While at LTC, she helped the college
create a culture of sustainability by leading the student and staff sustainability teams, teaching a section of
Principles of Sustainability, and worked with community members and local businesses. Gibbs was also the
program coordinator for the Associate Degree programs related to energy and sustainability.
Gibbs received her Bachelors Degree from Michigan State University in Zoology with a Specialization in
Environmental Studies from the RISE program. During college she interned with the Michigan Department of
Environmental Quality (MDEQ)’s Environmental Education Coordinator and later worked in the Land and
Water Management Division. After college Gibbs worked for an environmental consulting company as an
environmental scientist.
Gibbs is currently pursuing a Masters of Science in Sustainable Management and since November 2014 has
served as the first director for the Holland-Hope College Sustainability Institute.

CURRICULUM
Curriculum Chair: Barbara Stegink, bstegink39@gmail.com
Please note that the entire winter/spring curriculum calendar and course descriptions are available on our
website for your reference: www.hope.edu/hasp
January Courses:
Please refer to your green calendar for the course schedule. We will only be publishing errors or changes to the
calendar.
Artwork in the classroom: Andree Keneau will be the featured artist on display in the HASP classroom for
the month of January.
Note from Curriculum Chair:
I have never been very fond of New Year resolutions! They fit into the same category as making a wish when
you blow out all the candles on your birthday cake. Your wish usually does not come true, at least I never got
the baby sister I always wished for. However, as I see it, the biggest difference between a wish and a resolution
is that after you blow out all the candles and make your wish, you just sit back and wait for some “magic” to
happen. But when you make a New Year’s resolution, you are the only person who can make it happen.
This new year of 2016, those of us on the Curriculum Committee hope that you will make a resolution that will
include more involvement in HASP classes. If you have never taken a course, resolve to sign up for at least one
class and start to enjoy one of the best things that HASP has to offer its members. If you already attend classes,
try to branch out and register for a course that might be out of your comfort zone. Try something new and
different. If you already are attending several classes a week in a variety of subjects, good for you! Then the
next step for you is to be a course coordinator and submit a course proposal. Did you know that any HASP
member can propose a course? We receive many great suggestions for course ideas, but we would also like
your help to make these suggestions turn into course offerings. All you need to do is contact any of us serving
on the Curriculum Committee and we will gladly assist you in making this happen. Names and contact
information are listed below for your convenience. We look forward to helping you.

COMMUNICATIONS
Communications Chair: Lorelle Eberly, jakelorelle@sbcglobal.net
NEW CONTRIBUTORS are coming!! Former contributors are returning! The 2016 HASP Review is under
way!! Exclamation points are proliferating!!!!
Have you ever driven from Holland to Vancouver? Someone in our midst has. Have you ever (intentionally)
dove into the water, through a hole in wintery ice? Someone in our midst has. What special places from your
childhood do you hold close to our heart? Grandpa’s garden? What about a very strange place named
Nirvanaberg where organized systems of faith evolved from the town square?
HASP Review is an annual forum/anthology through which we share our dreams, fantasies and amazing stories
in this journey we travel. Poetry, prose and illustration are welcome. Submissions can be made via the HASP
office. Deadline for publication is April 15.

SERVICE
Service Chair: Larry Lynn, oldrun09@gmail.com
Service opportunities are also listed on the HASP website www.hope.edu/hasp under “Service Opportunities”
Please see the article towards the end of the bulletin for “Opportunities for Volunteering in Hope Classes”.
There are many wonderful opportunities for us to serve Hope students and faculty! Please contact Elliot Tanis,
tanis@hope.edu, with questions.
CultureWorks Institute of Creative Arts Request for Volunteers
CultureWorks is a Holland, MI, based, faith inspired nonprofit dedicated to making culturally relevant,
transformational art and design experiences accessible to youth from all backgrounds. Our after school program
provides a nurturing environment where professional teaching artists and designers work with middle and high
school students from all backgrounds to inspire curiosity, uncover talent, and develop 21st century skills.
We have several specific volunteer opportunities and we invite you to consider what might best align with your
skill, interest, and availability. We could not accomplish this work without committed volunteers, so we are
very grateful for your consideration. Thank you for your time and consideration.
For additional information about these requests, e-mail Larry Lynn at oldrun09@gmail.com. For more
information about CultureWorks, visit our website http://www.cultureworksica.com. Our Studio is located at
710 Chicago Dr., Suite 200 beside Engedi Church.
Grand Rapids Symphony Ushers
Do you like to volunteer but only if it is a fun event? Well, ushering for the Grand Rapids Symphony children’s
concerts is fun. The first concert is January 26, 2016, at Zeeland East High School for the younger children and
also features the Grand Rapids Ballet. The second concert is February 16, 2016, for 5th graders and it is at
Central Wesleyan Church in Holland. Each day there are 2 concerts and the time commitment is from 8:30 AM
– noon. There are a few ushers who enjoy it so much they do it every year, but I am always needing new
members to help.
If you are interested please contact Myra Karachy at 796.0067 or myrakarachy@tds.net
Second Semester Opportunities for Volunteering for Hope Classes
During the fall semester, 80 HASP members volunteered for 9 out of 10 requests. Thank you! Here are some
new and interesting opportunities for the spring semester. Please complete the form at the end of this article,
drop it off at the HASP office or contact Elliot Tanis, 396-2228 or tanis@hope.edu.
1. Professor Jon Osborn (Social Work) would like a HASP volunteer who has had administrative duties in a
human welfare organization during their career speak for his class on Social Interventions. That might be
someone who served in a leadership role for organizations such as The United Way, a public agency such as
Community Mental Health, or a national or international humanitarian agency such as The Peace Corps or
Bread for the World. The person's involvement must be in a not for profit domain and they should have served
an organization that aims to lessen human distress. It could also include any faith based organizations that
serve human interests such as Habitat or Africa's Children. The class meets on Tuesday and Thursday from
3:00-4:20 in Van Zoeren 240. He would like someone in Feb. or March.
2. Brenda Vander Meulen (Center for Faithful Leadership) would like a HASP volunteer to talk with students
in her class The Trusted Advisor sometime in the second half of the spring semester. The topic would be
around critical thinking and leadership skills. The class meets on MWF from 2:00 - 2:50 in Van Zoeren 151.
Students would benefit from hearing from a former corporate leader or non-profit leader about the value of
critical thinking and problem solving skills when working in an advisory role.
4
3. Professor Pete Vollbrecht (Biology) would welcome HASP volunteers who have background in anything
related to human health issues (broadly defined), who would be interested in providing guest lectures to
GEMS 158: Human Biology in Health and Disease, which meets MWF 9:30 - 10:20 am, in Winants
Auditorium in Graves Hall. The course is for non-science majors and is used to satisfy the lab science
requirement for general education; most students in the course are majors in Social Work and Physical
Education. He would like guest lectures on either: 1) focused topics in human health that the speaker has a
special interest in, or 2) a personal account of the speaker's career in a related field - a reflection on how
you got there, highlights and challenges of what you did in your work, and your hopes for the future of this
field. Dates are flexible within the MWF constraints.
4. Professor Amy Bade (Psychology) is teaching Human Sexuality and would like a HASP couple who has
been married for a long time to talk to her students about the secrets to a long marriage. The class meets
Tues/Thurs from 8:00-9:20 in Schaap Science Center 1030. She would like one (or two) couples the third or
fourth week in January.
5. Professor David Phillips (Economics) requests HASP volunteers for a course on the economics of
international poverty. The first half of the class focuses on the big question of "why are some countries poor
and others rich?" and the second half focuses on smaller scale questions regarding the lives of the poor and
which interventions are effective in fighting poverty. Students in the class often have limited experience in lowincome countries and the HASP volunteers would provide some firsthand content. HASP members who have
lived in a low-income country for a significant period of time would contribute to the class by speaking
about their firsthand experience. The HASP member would provide some background on their experience
through something they have previously written or through a short presentation. This would likely be followed
by a question and answer time with students. Timing during the semester is pretty flexible and would depend
on the particular expertise of the HASP volunteer; for instance, someone who had served as a nurse in a
missionary hospital would line up with the unit on health care; someone who worked in business might be
during the unit on finance. The class meets Tues/Thurs from 9:30-10:50 in the Chapel B14.
5. There will be 5 sections of Developmental Psychology so approximately 30 volunteers will be needed.
Details will be given next month. HASP members usually visit in late April.
I am willing to volunteer (indicate the Professor/event).
