Program: Mental Health: Much Ado about Everything; Jim Haveman

Mental Health and Substance use/abuse issues impacts all of us. Each of us needs to understand how to deal with Behavioral Health issues when they arise in our families and what public policy should be to deal with these challenges. Michigan has come a long way since the days of large institutions and consumers being “out of sight and out of mind.” We will explore today’s behavioral health systems, politics and policy in our community and state. What is working and what needs to change? The brain cannot be separated from the body, and systems of care are often in silos and it’s very difficult to navigate how to use it. How do we truly integrate systems of care so the care is seamless and has positive outcomes? Of particular interest will be the religious community’s opportunities to address Behavioral Health and what we collectively can do to be more caring and compassionate.

James K. Haveman has had and continues to have a distinguished history of public service management and volunteer work. From September 2012-2014 he worked by appointment of Governor Rick Snyder as the

Director of the MI Dept of Community Health. He was chosen to drive the Governor’s aggressive health and wellness agenda forward- a critical piece for reinventing Michigan. He had been Director of Mental Health from 1991-1996.

James had formally been Senior Health Advisor to the Iraqi Ministry of Health and to US Ambassador Paul

Bremer in 2003. Previously, he had served as Executive Director of Bethany Christian Services, the largest child welfare and adoptive agency in the United States, Executive Director of the Kent County Community

Mental Health Program and the Executive Director of Project Rehab, a substance abuse program located in

Grand Rapids.

James has received numerous awards including the National Governors Association Distinguished Service

Award and the Department of Defense Medal for Distinguished Public Service in 2004. He continues to serve on multiple non-profit boards including the National Advisory Board of the University of Michigan’s Institute for Health Policy and Innovation. A social worker by training, Haveman is a 1966 graduate of Calvin College, and earned his Masters degree in Social Work from Michigan State University. He is married to Barbara and they have two children and seven grandchildren.

Cutting the Cable Part II

Note from Curriculum Chair:

In our HASP Handbook you will find the following paragraph on the first page:

“HASP was conceived as an association of retired individuals having intellectual vitality and inquisitiveness. Its continuing goal is to broaden the members’ intellectual horizons and to enhance their cultural and social lives.”

Furthermore, our bylaws provide the Curriculum Committee with a specific charge:

“The Curriculum Committee shall conceive, initiate, promote and supervise seminars, courses, and study and discussion groups which address membership interests and needs.”

HASP Bylaws Article IV, Section 2,b,2

With these goals and objectives set before us, your Curriculum Committee has planned a summer term which will include interesting, informative and intellectual sessions on several areas of Islam. The committee felt that understanding the Islamic faith, exposure to cultural and social practices of Muslims, and sitting at their table to share their food, has never been more important for us than it is in today’s world.

Presenters from the Islamic Center in Grand Rapids will join us for three sessions covering “Basics of

Islam”, “History of Islam”, “Quran, the Role of Women, and Islam in the World Today”. Dr. Henry

Luttikhuizen, art professor at Calvin College, will return to present two sessions on the “Art and

Architecture of Islam”. Our own member Sara Leland will lead a study and discussion class using the book, “ I Speak for Myself ,” a collection of stories each telling what it means for women to be Muslim in

America. A DVD class will feature “Inside the Koran, A Journey into the Heart of Islam” and the summer term film series will include the film “Salmon Fishing in the Yemen”.

Finally, the Special Events Committee has joined us in this educational pursuit by planning a trip to the

Islamic Center and Mosque in Grand Rapids where you will be able to tour the center, observe a prayer service, and eat a Middle Eastern meal.

We sincerely hope that you will want to participate in these courses as much as your time will allow.

They are intended to help all of us increase and enhance our knowledge about Islam and also enable us to understand those around us who come from a different background, but share much of the same human values. We look forward to seeing you in class.

Any questions, comments and suggestions regarding our curriculum can be addressed to the following members of the curriculum committees:

COMMUNICATIONS Communications Chair: Lorelle Eberly, jakelorelle@sbcglobal.net

The Communications Committee extends thanks to all writers, poets, artists and illustrators, totaling 44 members, who have contributed to the 2016 issue of HASP Review . We are encouraged by a number of firsttime contributors and bolstered by the ongoing ones.

This issue will take us across the boundaries of time, and from halfway around the world to halfway across our own back yards. It will make you smile, grimace, and perhaps even draw a tear.

The art of self-expression via the written word and illustration is rewarding in and of itself but it is extrarewarding to receive feedback and perhaps even praise from others.

There are many in our vast membership who share their skills, interests and art with the membership and HASP

Review is one means of doing so.

At our annual Business Meeting, (June 7) you will be able to pick up your copy of this HASP Review. Take some time with it and if you find it enjoyable, please let individual contributors know their efforts are appreciated.

SERVICE Service Chair: Larry Lynn, oldrun09@gmail.com

Service opportunities are also listed on the HASP website www.hope.edu/hasp under “Service Opportunities”

HOLLAND FREE HEALTH CLINIC

The Holland Free Health Clinic is a non-profit organization in the Holland/Zeeland area that exists to meet the basic human need of health services for local people who are uninsured or insured through Medicaid.

People are helped by providing medical, dental or vision care. The clinic depends on donations of time and services from medical professionals and volunteers. There has been an interest among health professionals doing health missions locally rather than overseas. This need is as critical in our neighborhood as it is in other countries.

Please consider volunteering your time and talents regardless of the number of hours or days you can afford to donate. To learn more about HFHC check out their website at www.hfhclinic.org

.

To volunteer your services please contact either Marie Hamilton at vosareeno@sbcglobal.net

or Ann Anderson at annanderson22@chartermi.net

REST HAVEN

Maple Woods, 49 E. 32 nd

Street, is Rest Haven’s assisted living building. 88 senior adults live there – all with their own unique interests, stories and needs. They are looking to collaborate with HASP members to become engaged in relationship with residents.

A few of the ideas for engagement and collaboration are:

Coffee Chat – coffee, cookies and conversation, whether it be topical, general or personal. An intentional time to enrich the lives and satisfy the inquisitiveness of 1 or more residents.

A female resident has expressed a desire to be challenged intellectually. She wonders about auditing a college class or having in-depth discussion about various topics. She is a Bible scholar and loves anything historical.

Several World War II veterans who enjoy sharing their memories and experiences with others would appreciate good listeners.

4

A male resident would benefit from one-on-one visits and attention. This man worked for Creative Dining at

Hope College for 20 years and is now missing the stimulation of a college environment, Hope events, and is feeling lonely.

They are open to any ideas that would enrich the daily lives of the residents.

As for days and times – mornings or afternoons work really well and they would consider any day of the week.

Please contact Larry Lynn at 399-0799 or oldrun09@gmail.com

if interested.
