Note from Curriculum Chair: It has been a very unusual winter! Mild temperatures, more rain than snow, and a thunder and lightning storm on February 2 have all contributed to an unusual Michigan winter. It seems that the Winter/Spring term of HASP has also proven to be unusual. According to our office staff, registration has resulted in the need to close several courses, more than normal in any other Winter/Spring term. It is difficult to determine if it is because fewer members have gone south for the winter, there are fewer courses, the courses are so good everyone wants to sign up, or something else we haven’t thought of! To date, we have closed registration for 7 classes, one of 3 which was a limited enrollment of 12. Additional sessions for 2 of the classes, The Plan for Holland’s Future and Geography of Rivers, were added to accommodate more registrants. Closures are determined by presenter request or by the occupancy limit of our classroom. Perhaps this is a “good problem” to have; however, we do not want our members to feel frustrated or anxious about registering for courses. We understand how disappointing it can be to look forward to a class that you very much want to attend only to learn that there is no room for you. We try to add another session or offer the course for a future term, but that is not always possible. There may be significant reasons which brought about this unusual situation and we apologize for any inconvenience it may have caused our members. Be assured that the Curriculum Committee will be keeping a close watch on future registrations to determine if this term was indeed just an “unusual” one or if a new pattern is developing. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * ** The Curriculum sub-committees are meeting during February and March to plan for both the upcoming summer and fall terms. Any comments or suggestions that members wish to make with regard to the curriculum can be directed to the people listed below. Yes, collectively at least 39,000 years! How fortunate we are as HASP members to share and enjoy this vast resource. So...it only follows that among us, we have collected a plethora of publication possibilities for our 2016 HASP Review. In a recent memo to committee members, Jack Hyde commented that in the three week period following our January meeting, a "smattering" of creative works had been received. Smatterings over a short period are fine, but hoping instead for a plethora, we encourage and welcome your contribution submitted via the HASP office between now and the April 15 publication deadline. SERVICE Service Chair: Larry Lynn, oldrun09@gmail.com Service opportunities are also listed on the HASP website www.hope.edu/hasp under “Service Opportunities” BE A TULIP TIME TROLLEY TOUR GUIDE The 2016 Tulip Time Festival is fast approaching. Hope College Community Happenings: An Invitation from Western Theological Seminary to HASP members: • "Poetry on the Paintings of the Dutch Masters" with Marilyn Chandler McEntyre • Tuesday, March 22, 2016 at 7:00pm, No charge • Western Theological Seminary - Mulder Chapel Join us for an evening of poetry and rich discussion focusing on Dr. McEntyre's books: In Quiet Light, Drawn to the Light, and The Color of Light. Her poems are inspired by paintings by Vermeer, Rembrandt, and Van Gogh. Vermeer invites us into an environment rich with unspoken feeling. Rembrandt restores us to a sense of the sacramentality of daily life. Van Gogh calls for our consent--to relinquish, reorganize, reimagine, see into, and see through. Dr. McEntyre has written over a dozen books, including A Faithful Farewell, What's in a Phrase? and Caring for Words in a Culture of Lies. She has a Ph.D. in comparative literature and teaches medical humanities at the University of California Berkeley-UCSF Joint Medical Program. 6 Special Events Registration Forms: GR Choir of Men & Boys Lenten Concert Friday, March 18, 2016 $5 pp Name(s): __________________________________________________________ Emergency Contact Person Name & Number: ____________________________________________ Stratford Theatre Festival September 20-22, 2016 COST: Single Hotel Occupancy $ 545.00 Double Hotel Occupancy $ 400.00 Name (1st guest)_______________________ Telephone#_____________ Email:_______________________ Name (2nd guest)_______________________Telephone#_____________ Email:_______________________ Emergency Contact Name & Phone #: _______________________________________________________ Total Amount of your remittance: $_______________ 7 Nomination for HASP Distinguished Service Award Name: _________________________________________________________________________ HASP Participation: __________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________ Qualifications for the award: __________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________ Helpful biographical information: __________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________ Submitted by: ______________________________________________________________________ Date: ____________________________________ 8
