Poverty Matters: But it doesn’t define who you are and what you can be! How one local district is preparing all
students to be college capable and career ready.
In the Holland/Zeeland Area, the number of students living in poverty has increased by over 15% in the last two years.
Currently, 3/4 children attending Holland Public Schools qualify for free or reduced lunch. This presentation will
showcase community wide and district efforts that are working in collaboration to support all children to be college
capable and career ready. Schools are seeking to become community-based centers to meet the ongoing and persistent
needs of children and families. Presentation highlights will include the areas only Two-Way Bilingual Immersion
Program and Early College High School, HPS’ Early Literacy Initiative, and the impact of School Choice on
neighborhoods & communities.
Dr. Brian Davis is the current superintendent of Holland Public Schools. This is his 24th year in education as a teacher,
counselor, principal and Superintendent. Superintendent Davis is a first generation college graduate in his family.
Working many part-time jobs throughout high school and college, he was able to pay for his college education.
Dr. Davis holds the following degrees:
• Bachelor of Science in Education from Central Michigan University

Note from Curriculum Chair:
It has been a very unusual winter! Mild temperatures, more rain than snow, and a thunder and lightning storm
on February 2 have all contributed to an unusual Michigan winter. It seems that the Winter/Spring term of
HASP has also proven to be unusual. According to our office staff, registration has resulted in the need to close
several courses, more than normal in any other Winter/Spring term. It is difficult to determine if it is because
fewer members have gone south for the winter, there are fewer courses, the courses are so good everyone wants
to sign up, or something else we haven’t thought of! To date, we have closed registration for 7 classes, one of
3
which was a limited enrollment of 12. Additional sessions for 2 of the classes, The Plan for Holland’s Future
and Geography of Rivers, were added to accommodate more registrants. Closures are determined by presenter
request or by the occupancy limit of our classroom. Perhaps this is a “good problem” to have; however, we do
not want our members to feel frustrated or anxious about registering for courses. We understand how
disappointing it can be to look forward to a class that you very much want to attend only to learn that there is no
room for you. We try to add another session or offer the course for a future term, but that is not always
possible. There may be significant reasons which brought about this unusual situation and we apologize for any
inconvenience it may have caused our members. Be assured that the Curriculum Committee will be keeping a
close watch on future registrations to determine if this term was indeed just an “unusual” one or if a new pattern
is developing.

specific sub-committee before March 18th.

COMMUNICATIONS
Communications Chair: Lorelle Eberly, jakelorelle@sbcglobal.net
How many years of opportunities would a group of over 600 members with a hypothetical average age of 65
have had to gather experiences, knowledge, creative thoughts, and stories? Yes, collectively at least 39,000
years! How fortunate we are as HASP members to share and enjoy this vast resource.
So...it only follows that among us, we have collected a plethora of publication possibilities for our 2016 HASP
Review. In a recent memo to committee members, Jack Hyde commented that in the three week period
following our January meeting, a "smattering" of creative works had been received. Smatterings over a short
period are fine, but hoping instead for a plethora, we encourage and welcome your contribution submitted via
the HASP office between now and the April 15 publication deadline.
SERVICE
Service Chair: Larry Lynn, oldrun09@gmail.com
Service opportunities are also listed on the HASP website www.hope.edu/hasp under “Service Opportunities”
BE A TULIP TIME TROLLEY TOUR GUIDE
The 2016 Tulip Time Festival is fast approaching. The opportunity to be a tour guide this year is about to pass
you by.
You will miss learning many interesting stories about Holland and its Dutch culture and history.
You will miss the fun of interacting with all those tourists and the thrill of hearing their appreciation for the fun
time they had on the trolley.
You will miss those unexpected interactions, those special moments that really add to the experience.
You will miss the camaraderie with all those great people who put on the costume and extra socks and tell the
jokes and the drivers who add their own dimension.
So hurry up and contact David Tapley at DRice2010@earthlink.net or 616-886-9106. The last training round
starts in early March so don’t miss it.
If you do drag your feet too long, you can still contact David and be an early volunteer for 2017.

• PARKING - dedicated spaces for HASP members! Important please read~
We need your help! Did you know that Staff in the Anderson Werkmen building have been asked to
park elsewhere so that HASP may have 12 spaces close to the Anderson Werkman building? On
numerous occasions we have looked at the spaces during HASP classes and they are not full. Please
make sure you are parking in the 12 spaces on the WEST side of the old Versendaal building on 8th
Street indicating reserved parking for HASP members. This is the row of spots between the old fire
house and the empty old Versendaal building, right across from the new Marriott. We want to see them
full so we are practicing good stewardship of the spaces! Remember to have your HASP parking tag
visible!

Hope College Community Happenings:
An Invitation from Western Theological Seminary to HASP members:
• "Poetry on the Paintings of the Dutch Masters" with Marilyn Chandler McEntyre
• Tuesday, March 22, 2016 at 7:00pm, No charge
• Western Theological Seminary - Mulder Chapel
Join us for an evening of poetry and rich discussion focusing on Dr. McEntyre's books: In Quiet Light, Drawn
to the Light, and The Color of Light. Her poems are inspired by paintings by Vermeer, Rembrandt, and Van
Gogh.
Vermeer invites us into an environment rich with unspoken feeling. Rembrandt restores us to a sense of the
sacramentality of daily life. Van Gogh calls for our consent--to relinquish, reorganize, reimagine, see into, and
see through.
Dr. McEntyre has written over a dozen books, including A Faithful Farewell, What's in a Phrase? and Caring
for Words in a Culture of Lies. She has a Ph.D. in comparative literature and teaches medical humanities at the
University of California Berkeley-UCSF Joint Medical Program.
