Starbucks ( SBUX ) began in 1971 as a single coffee shop in Seattle. Today, it’s the world largest coffee retailer, with over 19,000 locations in more than 60 countries .

The staff, known as “partners” within the company and “baristas” to the public, sell over 2 billion cups of coffee every year.

1971 Starbucks opens its first store in Seattle’s

Pike Place Market.

1982 Starbucks begins providing coffee to fine restaurants and espresso bars.

1987 Il Giornale acquires Starbucks assets with the backing of local investors and changes its name to Starbucks Corporation. Opens in Chicago and Vancouver, Canada. Total stores: 17

1991 Opens first licensed airport store at Seattle’s

Sea-Tac International Airport. Total stores: 116

1995 Begins serving Frappuccino blended beverages.

Introduces Starbucks ice cream.

1996 Opens first stores outside of North America in

Japan and Singapore. Total stores: 1,015

1998 Acquires Tazo, a tea company based in Portland,

Oregon.

1999 Opens stores in China, Kuwait, Lebanon and

South Korea. Total stores: 2,498.

2004 Introduces Starbucks Coffee Master Program.

Opens stores in: France. Total stores: 8,569

Starbucks is voted the most engaged brand in social media in 2009 .

Today , nearly 22m people on Facebook 'like'

Starbucks, and the brand has 1.5m followers on
