CaseEMS GB Meeting Minutes Tuesday, October 4, 2011 Jeff Luk (Dr. Luk) presentation Can call him Jeff EMS Medical director/University Hospital Emergency Medicine doctor We are on his medical license He wanted to meet us because he is the new medical director Case Study o 20 yr. old male found in Clarke o Bottom of the stairs laying down o Primary survey (ABC’s) Airway – if he can talk then airway intact Breathing – respiration, quality of respiration, carry stethoscope Look, feeling, listen Listen for breath sounds on both sides of lungs Cardio – pulse, cap refill (less than 2 sec.), look at skin (blue is bad) If any of these are not in order then call ALS o Check mental status (AAO x 4) Awake Aroused/Aware Oriented (x4) Place Person Time (possible questions: day of week, month, current president, year) Event o Rapid trauma assessment Abrasions Deformities Contusions Punctures, penetrations Lacerations Burns Tenderness/Pain Smell odor of alcohol in breath (if can smell means he is not reliable) o If smell alcohol then do c spine with backboard o AMS (altered mental status) With alcohol Seizure Head trauma (brain bleed) Diabetes – sugar Low blood pressure Stroke (CVA) Shifts Infection Sodium, potassium abnormality 2001 Rosenberg case o Washington DC EMS dispatched to Rosenberg o Messed up there assessment and EMS took to regular hospital o The doctors messed up and Rosenberg died Moral of story: DO NOT MINIMIZE DRUNK PATIENTS It’s important to contact Dr. Luk if not sure – err on the side of caution o Once contact Dr. Luk then it is all on him – it is how to protect yourself Shift officer for Friday is leaving Patrick is looking for shift officer on Friday If interested see him Can foresee a shuffling of times Still need to keep standard of a shift officer on every shift Standbye Contact Hiroko if interested 5K, Amazing Race Standbye for events to provide medical care in case they need it October 15 – Homecoming 5K Need to have 2 EMT-b certified and then any CPR certified can do CPR classes Look for information to come soon MCI October 29 RTA bus crashing into a bus stop Can participate whether certified or not EMT’s and First Responders can act as responders If not certified can be participant, volunteer, bystander Cleveland, Cleveland Heights, UH, etc. all participated last year – hopefully same for this year
