SUR 110 Medication Drug Cards MEDICATION: Furosemide TRADE NAME: Lasix GENERIC NAME: Furosemide CLASSIFICATION: diuretic ACTION: Furosemide works by blocking the absorption of salt and fluid in the kidney tubules, causing a profound increase in urine output (diuresis). ROUTE (IN SURGERY): IV DOSAGE (ADULT): The dosage is based on medical condition and response to therapy. Adult - The usual initial dose of LASIX is 20 to 80 mg given as a single dose. Ordinarily a prompt diuresis ensues. If needed, the same dose can be administered 6 to 8 hours later or the dose may be increased. The dose may be raised by 20 or 40 mg and given not sooner than 6 to 8 hours after the previous dose until the desired diuretic effect has been obtained. In children, doses greater than 6 mg per kilogram of body weight are not recommended. SIDE EFFECTS: (2 MOST COMMON AND 2 MOST SERIOUS): Commonly observed side effects are low blood pressure, and water and electrolyte depletion. Less common side effects include jaundice, ringing in ears (tinnitus), light sensitivity, rash, pancreatitis, nausea, abdominal pain, dizziness, anemia, and other blood disorders.
