Reading Workshop Reading Workshop- this block consists of 15 minutes of direct instruction, a 40 minute independent work period, and a 10 minute closing. During the reading workshop, students will focus on reading strategies, novel studies, independent reading, guided reading, and reading response. During the independent time students will be immersed into literature, whether it is our novel studies, book clubs or their own independent reading book. Some of the novels we will plan to enjoy this year are The Tale of Despereaux, Number the Stars, Frindle, and more. Writing Workshop Writing Workshop- this block consists of a 10 minute mini-lesson, 40 minute independent work period, and a 10 minute closing. Students will focus on the writing process while working on expanding and supporting their writing ideas. This time will include independent writing, peer editing, one on one conferencing, grammar instruction, and peer collaboration. This year we will focus on writing both an expository and narrative essay. Students will brainstorm ideas, plan, draft, revise, edit, and publish their writing. Before they reach the publishing stage of the writing process, they will have received feedback from either a peer or teacher and compared their writing to the rubric. Skills Workshop- this time will focus on spelling and vocabulary development.
