First Grade m&m
Highlights
Your M&M’s have grown so much in the last few months. It is so exciting to see the progress they are making.
Reader’s WorkshopWe have been focusing on different strategies that we can use to decode tricky words. We have been practicing Eagle Eye, Lips the Fish, Stretchy Snake, Chunky
Monkey, Skippy Frog, Careful Caterpillar and Tryin Lion. Each child has a bookmark in their individual reading envelopes to remind them of these when they are at home reading.
Word StudyWe have completed a few different units of study,
Short vs. Long Vowels, Syllables and Digraphs. The skills learned in these units will help us become better readers and writers.
Writer’s WorkshopWe have been focusing on writing small moments. We pick a big event like vacation and ZOOM in one small event that happened during that vacation to write a story about. We have talked about how Good Writers add details and feelings so that the reader can connect to the story. We also have been working on making sure we are capitalizing and using punctuation correctly.
Math WorkshopWe have really been challenging our thinking as mathematicians. We have completed the following units,
Subtraction with in 10, Fact Families, Geometry, and Place Value with in 10s. This week we are focusing on adding/subtracting, 0, 1,
2 and 10 to numbers while also comparing which number is more and which number is less.
Content We started the month of October focusing on Fire
Safety before moving in to our Life Science curriculum. As scientists, we have been focusing on Matter (Solids and Liquids).
We also looked at Motion (push/pull/gravity). These two units of
Science will be revisited and built upon in the 2 nd trimester as well.
