The Life of a First Grade m&m SEPTEMBER Newsletter Highlights Your m&m’s are adjusting well to a full day of school. Their stamina is increasing and their overall love of learning is growing daily. Reader’s Workshop- We are finally in full swing for our reader’s workshop. Guided reading groups have started and individual high frequency word work has been put into place. Students are responsible for completing their 3 literacy based activities each day and are doing well at increasing their stamina as independent readers. Word Study- We have completed one unit of study title “Linking Letters and Sounds” and are in the middle of our second unit of study “Short and Long Vowels”. Writer’s Workshop- We have been focusing on learning more about each other through our “Special Student of the Day” writing activity. With in this we are learning about letters, sounds and words by examining each individual student’s name. We then practice our communication skills by interviewing the “special student of the day”. Once our interviews are complete, we take our newly learning information and put it into complete sentences. Math Workshop- We have completed 2 units for math workshop. The first unit was Early Number Concepts. We used this unit to get use to the structure of math workshop. In our second unit, “Addition #1” we began switching amongst the grade level in order to reach each individual child’s needs. The first graders really seem to like intermixing with students from the other classes and all show growth from their pre to post assessments. Content- We completed our first social studies unit titled “Citizenship, Rights and Responsibilities”. In this unit we focused on learning how to be a good school citizen. Our current unit of study falls under our health curriculum and it is all about how to be safe.
