MRS. WITTEVEEN’s 6th Grade
English/Language Arts
Syllabus
Purpose: This class is designed to give students opportunities to practice, with guidance, the skills
they have in communication. As we work together, students will be challenged to expand their
knowledge and ability in the areas of reading, writing, thinking, listening, and speaking.
Prepared: Please bring the following items.

Pen- blue or black
Pen- red
Highlighter- any color
3 Ring binder with paper and dividers
Outside Free reading book
All class materials, Including Homework
Optional
Flash drive
Colored pencils
Agenda/calendar
Course Content: This class is designed in accordance with the State of Michigan curriculum
expectations while using a wide variety of activities. There will be a focus on
 The Six Traits of Writing
 Grammar/Parts of Speech
 Literature – both fiction and non-fiction
 Oral Presentations
Class Materials: Resources used in this class include but will not be limited to the following.
Holt Literature Series Introductory Course
Write Source –Writing and Grammar
The Westing Game
Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry
Banner in the Sky
Expectations: Each student should follow our building/classroom ROCKS behavior expectations.
 Complete and turn in all assignments on time.
 Your work speaks to who you are – be sure it is done with high quality, neatness and
thoroughness.
 Be sure to look at Pinnacle and the 6th grade ELA links on Mrs. Witteveen’s teacher page often,
especially when absent.
 Use class time wisely. Do your work when the teacher is available to help with questions.
 Read often during the week in and outside of school. Every student will turn in a log of their
reading and will have sharing activities to complete weekly.

Late Policy:
All work is expected to be in on time meeting quality expectations. Late work will be accepted for
up to two weeks with a minimum 30% reduction in points; not to exceed 50%.
