30TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME OCTOBER 26, 2014 The reason why we can heed these otherwise overwhelming words – “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind” – is because of a seminal truth that has already taken hold of us: God does not want anything from us that he has not himself first given us. The utterance of this Great Commandment is a confirmation that God has first loved us in such a way that it is supremely possible for us to love him as he demands. The generosity of our charity toward others flows from our mindfulness that we “were once aliens,” but then God’s love came and claimed us. That is why we truly can become “imitators of the Lord.” “Be holy, for I, the Lord your God, am holy” (Lev 19:2). The people of God must tale God as their model. He is loving and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in mercy. In his fidelity, he cares for those who cannot help themselves. The widow, the alien, the orphan are under his special protection (Exod 22:22; Deut 14:29). // The people bound to him by covenant must also show their fidelity by caring for the powerless. All the detailed laws of the covenant lead back to this basic principle: the sole demand of God is love. // Jesus says that the second commandment is like the first. In fact it is the manifestation of the first. If you love the Lord your God with your whole being, that love will show itself in the feeding of the hungry, the sheltering of the homeless, the release of the oppressed.Jesus, the supreme revelation of the Father’s love (John 3:16), showed the depth of that love by giving his life for us when we were still powerless (Rom 5:6). The sign that we are his disciples is our love for one another(John 3:35). ST. SUNDAY, OCTOBER 26 – THIRTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME: SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION: 8:00 AM and 10:15 AM. THE FAMILY PRAYER CHALICE FOR VOCATIONS (FPC): Jesus told us to ask the Harvest Master to send laborers into his harvest. May the prayers of our participating families bear fruit. Our thanks to THE GRAEFF FAMILY (10:30 AM) for hosting the FPC for Vocations this week. Sign up in vestibule. FAMILY PERSPECTIVE: In today’s gospel the Pharisee was talking about commandments (Something we are forced to obey by external pressure) and Jesus was talking about love (an internal exhortation to give our heart, soul and mind to another). One demands allegiance, the other requires personal commitment. In our families we daily lay down our lives for each other not because we ‘gotta’ but because love compels us. PRO-LIFE REFLECTION: Let us pray for all pre-born children that their parents will have the courage to nurture the gift of life within and bring their children up to know God and love Him in this world so that they can be with Him in heaven for all eternity. STEWARDSHIP: “Whoever sacrifices to any god, save to the Lord only, shall be utterly destroyed.” – Exodus 22:20. Do you put other “gods” before God? Is your love of money, power, status or some personal possession greater than your love for God? If so, you may want to pay attention to the scripture reading because you are not going to like the outcome. The good news – it’s not too late to put God first in your life. LAST WEEK YOU CONTRIBUTED: Sunday: $3,442; General Repair: $407; Expenses: $5,443.07. Thank you for your generosity! FRATERNAL CHARITY: ST. This indulgence is applicable only to the souls in purgatory. This indulgence is a plenary one from November 1 through November 8 and can be gained on each one of these days. On the other days of the year, this indulgence is a partial one. PASTORAL NOTE: An indulgence is the remission in the eyes of God of the temporal punishment due to sins whose culpable element has already been taken away. The Christian faithful who are rightly disposed and observe the definite, prescribed conditions (Have the intention of gaining the indulgence; receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation and Holy Eucharist near the prescribed indulgence or same day if possible; Pray 6 Our Fathers, 6 Hail Marys and 6 Glory Bes for the intentions of the Holy Father near the prescribed indulgence or same day if possible; Perform the prescribed action of the indulgence; be free from all attachment to venial sin), gain this remission through the effective assistance of the Church, which, as the minister of redemption, authoritatively distributes and applies the treasury of the expiatory works of Christ and the saints. An indulgence is either plenary of partial, that is, it frees a person either from all or from some of the temporal punishment due to sins. REQUIESCANT IN PACE!
