*“A vos marques, prêts, partez"! “Ready, set, go”! It is not quite a race but almost!
Course description and objectives: FRCH 101 is the first semester of a beginning
college-level French course (fast pace, time consuming but fun and as fun as you want to
make it). Its overall goal is to provide you with the basic tools of vocabulary (paroles),
grammar (structures), and culture (France and Francophonie). In class you be asked to
communicate in French. You will be practicing the 4 “compétences européennes” skills:
expression orale, expression écrite (EO& EE), compréhension orale, and comprehension
écrite (CO & CE) and will be tested on these skills. An equally important goal of this
course is to develop your cultural awareness of the diversity of the French-speaking
world, la Francophonie, presented through out the book with the reportages, videoblogs,
and other authentic documents.
Devoirs: Daily homework consists of readings and exercises in the textbook (le manuel ou le
livre) and written work in the workbook (WB, le cahier). You can expect to spend a minimum of
4 hours a week outside of class on your French homework. The workbook must be completed,
checked against the answers in the back, and corrected in a different color pen daily. To
complete the oral sections of your workbook, visit the Vis-à-Vis Learning Center online:
www.mhhe.com/visavis5. Journal intime in WB is due the day before the chapter contrôle
(test). Any suspected use of an online translator will result in an F. If and when specified, you
will have to type some short essays (font 12/double space/accents on
http://french.about.com/od/writing/ss/typeaccents_7.htm for p.c. & _8.htm for mac. More

Grades/notes: Your grade for the course will be based on the following distribution

Advice to acquire good study habits and obtain excellent results in French
1. Be(come) an active learner by getting involved 100% and interested in studying vocabulary & grammar
structures intelligently, committing them to memory, communicating in French, participating in class,
doing homework daily (see note), doing extra homework of your choice (i.e. watch French movies & news
in the lab, listen and memorizing French songs) enjoying the whole process (frustrating at time) of learning
a foreign language and culture.
2. Don’t wait for the end of the semester to ask me questions; as soon as a difficulty arises, come see me
to my office during office hours and by appointment. I will be glad to help you overcome any hurdles.
3. Be responsible for these ‘actions’ geared towards your improvements and your mastery of French.
Only then will you be able to see positive, ‘long lasting results’.
4. Come prepared to class. It will be more enjoyable for you to speak and comprehend French!

You will have vocabulary, grammar, cultural, reading and writing homework activities to do
in the Vis-à-vis book (B) and workbook (WB), and from hand-outs.
“Read ahead” as assigned above. It is indispensable that you do all the exercises of your workbook
efficiently and daily. It is your responsibility to:
- review the material we cover in class daily, take notes/read your “class notes”, memorize the
‘grammatical structures, write questions to ask me whenever…
- apply what you review in doing conscientiously each exercise (there is always a model but keep
in mind what grammatical or vocabulary part you are doing).
- correct yourself using the answer key after you did the ex. If you don’t understand it, ask in class
or come see me during my office hours.
- listen and do the listening section daily; it will help your C.O. tremendously.
The workbook is your personal passport to progress at your speed, it is for you and
only you! I will answer any questions you may have doing these exercises but I won’t
pick it up but will check it. However, the Journal Intime is mandatory

Journal Intime (in your Workbook) or Ecriture (in your Book) is worth 10 points (each
chapter’s test.) and is due the day before the test. No exception!
You will have to put efforts into it: write a draft, check words’ spelling, gender, grammar
structures… You are writing these short essays weekly at home with your open book to
develop and improve all the skills learned.
