REGENTS CHEMISTRY COURSE INFORMATION SHEET Mrs. Ermann 1. Course Description Topics of Study include: Classification and Study of Matter Atomic Structure Nuclear Chemistry Periodic Table and Chemical Bonds Chemical Reactions and Stoichiometry Reaction Kinetics and Equilibrium Acids and Bases Oxidation-Reduction Reactions Organic Chemistry Other aspects of Regents Chemistry include: Instructor Web Site: mrsermann.wikispaces.com Well-equipped chemistry lab Emphasis on lab activities and demonstrations Use of computer probes 2. Helpful Suggestions to Student ***READ the material assigned for each topic*** ***Each student MUST have a scientific calculator*** Be sure that you can do the type of calculations done in each laboratory experiment. Review the Teacher’s Edition of Unit PowerPoint presentations on the web site Be sure to self-assess your performance with Practice Tests. ASK FOR HELP AS SOON AS IT IS NEEDED. 3. Text Titles Lecture: Conceptual Chemistry: Understanding our World of Atoms and Molecules, John Suchocki, 2001 Prentice Hall Laboratory guides are supplied by the teacher. A Regents Exam review book is highly recommended. 4. Homework Policy There is some homework to do almost every night. The type and amount of homework varies with the topics studied and the types of activities. Homework assignments may include writing lab reports, reading texts and other materials, writing answers to review questions, writing research papers and studying for tests and quizzes. Homework may be checked or collected and graded. Late homework assignments will not be accepted. Late lab reports and other assignments are not accepted unless extenuating circumstances occur. Any unfinished assignment is averaged as a ZERO. 5. Examination Policy Tests and quizzes are designed to allow the student to show knowledge and understanding of the topics studied. The student must demonstrate knowledge and understanding of chemical concepts and the ability to solve problems and complete calculations given sample lab results. 6. Grading Policy Grading is based on a total points system. A student’s grade is calculated by dividing the total number of points earned divided by the maximum number of points that could be earned. 7. Attendance Class attendance directly affects the participation grade. It is the student's responsibility to see the teacher and make arrangements to make-up any work missed due to a legal absence. Work missed due to an illegal absence may not be made up, and will result in a grade of zero. All labs activities and lab reports MUST be made up.
