U1D1: Welcome to Chemistry Welcome to Chemistry! Please… 1. Sit in any seat where there is a folder 2. Once you have found your seat, complete the Last Name. First Name ID # book card: Telephone # “Contemporary Chemistry” “Book #: ________________” “I am taking this class because……” “One thing you should know about me is…” “Name I liked to be called in class: ________________________” 3. Done? Begin reading through the materials in the folder. U1D1: Welcome to Chemistry; Doing Science Today: 1. Introductions 2. The Folder… 3. The classroom… 4. Show me what you know! Objective: I know how the classroom is set up and the expectations for the class. = Introductions………… 1. Who am I? 2. Who is in this class? With the person(s) at the same table as you, discuss the answers to the questions on the card as well as what you did this summer. You will each get time to introduce the person you spoke with. 3. Graphing calculators on not permitted by the state on the Regents exam. • 3) Pens and pencils = Assessments: • Regents and Quarterly Exams: – The Regents exam is the exam for the course. – There will be Quarterly exams: Multiple choice. • Testing Format: The unit tests and the Regents exam will consist of both multiple choice and constructed response questions. = CLASS RULES - - BE ON TIME Actively participate in class WATER will be allowed in class EXCEPTION: DURING A LAB ACTIVITY Respect the learning of others Follow safety protocols You are expected to follow all WHS district policies/Code of Conduct in this class= How to be Successful in Class ABILITY + EFFORT = PROBABILITY OF SUCCESS Grading: Assignments/Checks 2-10 points Tests/quizzes 20 – 200 points Laboratory 50 – 100 points 5 -10% 70 % 20-25 % every day = 33% in the overall average every other day = 17% in the overall average. Complete any parts that you can prior to class tomorrow. – Have a GREAT rest of the day! Science is a verb! • You got a problem? YOU GOT A PROBLEM???? Then solve it, using the Scientific Method! It is a logical sequence of steps designed specifically to solve problems! • “You got a problem, yo, I’ll solve it” – Vanilla Ice Here is the problem… Tangrams You are to arrange the 4 pieces to form a square.= (15 min) WOW!!! A new discovery • While exploring the recesses of an extinct volcano, scientists stumbled upon a new piece to the puzzle… • Your job is to incorporate this new information into a new square!=(10 min) So.. • How is this activity similar to “doing science? Just think… • This would have been quite dull if I drew the pieces on the board and you had to figure it out in your head…. • The beauty of chemistry is that although the concepts can be abstract, they can be tested in a laboratory! • The beauty of science is that it is fluid. As new information is discovered, lines of thinking change and adapt. = So now that you’ve done a little thinking… • The activity today required no special safety procedures. That’s not true for many of the experiments that are performed in science class. • Hence the topic of your first Laboratory: Safety in the Chemistry Classroom= A TYPICAL LAB PERIOD 1) Pick up the new lab paper /have pre-lab out 2) Background for the lab, the procedures and any safety precautions discussed. Take notes if you have to. 3) Get goggles and put them on, and start gathering equipment. **10-pt penalty for not wearing 4) You and your lab partner will work together to complete the lab. * record any data in the provided data table (correct precision/units) 5) Clean up the lab station thoroughly Chemical wastes will be disposed of as per teacher instruction. Make sure to completely clean up the bench top and dry it off. 6) Once all groups have completed *goggles may be removed *placed back in the racks of the goggle cabinet neatly. * last person close cabinet and activate the ultraviolet light. 7) Begin the write up. *Draw graphs, solve problems, write answers. All students are to be engaged until the dismissal bell rings. REGENTS REQUIREMENT FOR LABS 1200 minutes of hands-on laboratory activity with PASSING lab reports to sit for the Regents exam. LATE and INCOMPLETE LABS will be penalized 10 points up to one day late, then 30 points thereafter. In order to only lose 10 points for turning in an incomplete lab, the lab must be completed and return w/in 24 hours! If you miss lab, arrange to make it up after school within FIVE SCHOOL DAYS of your return (on a Tuesday, Wednesday or a Thursday). Bring someone to help you. Part 3: Scavenger Hunt- Paraphrase the posters with each piece of equipment. Label the location of the safety equipment on the map located on the next page by using the item number.
