Sugar act? Who was James Otis? Why was James Otis and his followers angry?
What was the “Battle Cry” of the Colonists? What are quarters? What was the
Quartering Act?
Motivation:
The Colonists were angry over being ruled by King George III of England. They were
also angry over all of the new Acts or Laws that Parliament (British Congress)
passed without asking the Colonists what they thought. Taxes- money paid to the
government. The Sugar Act was passed by Parliament in 1764. Taxed items like
sugar and molasses that were bought in countries other than England. tariff – A tax
on Trade goods. Forced Colonists to buy from England. James Otis (Mass Lawyer) –
angry because Colonists did not have any representation in Parliament (British
Congress). Parliament could pass laws for the Colonists but the Colonists could not
have a say or a vote when the laws were made. “NO Taxation without
Representation” Battle Cry of the Colonists. The Quartering Act was passed by
Parliament in 1765. Quarters are places to eat and sleep. Colonial families were
forced to house and feed British Soldiers. Saved the British Govt. money
