CHANGES IN COMBAT
• New technology emerged
during WWI that made it a
very bloody war
• Old and new strategies
combined on the battle
field
• Tanks in the West and
Horses in the East
WHAT WAS TRENCH WARFARE?
• Series of trenches dug in the
ground to avoid enemy fire.
• Resulted in a STALEMATE
because neither side could gain
any land.
• Dirty, disease ridden (lice, trench
foot), lots of death.
• The average lifespan in the
trenches was only a few weeks.
• No Man’s Land

NEW WAR = NEW TECHNOLOGY
• poison gas, machine gun, gas masks, zeppelins, airplanes,
barbed wire, grenades, tanks, U-boats, land mines, flame
throwers

• Nicknamed “doughboys”
(inexperienced, eager)
• As US troops role in Russia pulls
out of the war (Russian
Revolution)
• Germany realizes end is near
THE END OF THE WAR
• US support too much for
Germany and allies to handle
• An armistice was called
November 11, 1918.
• Now the countries involved
need to figure out the peace
treaty
• Treaty of Versailles lays
groundwork for WWII
