Sculpture Vocabulary Sculpture Sculpture in the round Relief Sculpture Shape Form Balance Symmetrical Asymmetrical Negative Space Scale Color Movement SCULPTURE A three-dimensional form modeled, carved, or assembled. SCULPTURE IN THE ROUND Free-standing sculpture, such as a statue, that you can view from all sides and that is not attached (except possibly at the base) to any other surface. RELIEF Sculpture in which figures or other images are attached to a flat background but project out from it to some degree (bas-relief, haut-relief). SHAPE A two-dimensional area that can be Organic or Geometric FORM A three dimensional object that can be measured by height, width, and depth. POSITIVE SPACE The space in an artwork that is occupied by the object depicted NEGATIVE SPACE The space in and around the objects depicted. PROPORTION Size relationships between parts of a whole, or between two or more objects perceived as a unit. SCALE Size in relation to some “normal” or constant size. Compare with proportion. BALANCE Balance is arranging elements so that no one part of a work overpowers, or seems heavier than any other part. The three different kinds of balance are symmetrical, asymmetrical, and radial. SYMMETRICAL (BALANCE) When both sides of an artwork on either side of the horizontal or vertical axis of the picture plane are exactly (or nearly exactly) the same. ASYMMETRICAL (BALANCE) Unequal distribution of weight or in shape, size, or arrangement; lacking symmetry. MOVEMENT The path the viewer's eye follows throughout an artwork. COLOR Color pertains to the use of hue in artwork and design. Defined as primary colors (red, yellow, blue) and secondary colors (green, orange, violet), various color schemes, etc. What you will learn during the Sculpture Unit: *Explore three-dimensional art by working with a variety of techniques and media *Discover historical and cultural influences on sculpture *Create original pieces while developing your own artistic expression An Exploration into 3-D Art Sculpture Ceramics Poster Board Pinching Foam Coiling Plaster Slab-Construction Wire Relief Paper Mache Glazing Shape Sculptures Relief Pinch Pot Double-Pinch Fish Slab-Construction Relief Tiles Coiled Vessels Grading Policy 60% Projects 20% Class Participation, Quizzes, Tests 20% Sketchbook, Homework, Classwork
