SCULPTURE – COURSE DESCRIPTION Developing the ability to see, think and build three-dimensionally and to create functional works of art are the two purposes of this course. Students learn to take ideas from two-dimensional planning stages through construction of three-dimensional projects using good design concepts learned in Art I. This ability can be beneficial in everyday life around the home or in building trades, mechanical trades, etc. Mass production of goods has all but eliminated handmade, one of a kind items in our society. Students will learn the value of making items by hand and the satisfaction of making personal, unique, functional works of art. The Sculpture Course will explore sculpting techniques (modeling, carving, assemblage, and casting) and various crafts such as papermaking, basketry, jewelry, weaving, etc. Each unit will involve studying the history of the art form, prominent artists, understanding of tools, materials and techniques used, and career possibilities. OBJECTIVES: The student will be able to explain the characteristics, types, construction methods, and expressive possibilities of three-dimensional art forms. The student will be able to create sculpture using four different methods of construction. The student will be able to create various crafts using traditional, handmade methods. UNITS: 1) Introduction to Sculpture 2) Sculpture Techniques 3) Crafts FEES: There is no fee to take Sculpture. If a student wishes to take a project home or fire ceramic projects, they may be required to pay for the supplies used in creating that project.
