Fast Food Assignment
Did you know that most adolescents fail to meet the
recommended dietary requirements for caloric and
nutrient intake? Many teens in fact receive the majority of
their calories from processed and high fat foods. A low
intake of essential nutrients including vitamin A, folic acid,
fiber, iron and calcium in prevalent among adolescents. A
low intake of iron and calcium in particular is common
among female adolescents, which can impair cognitive
function and physical performance, as well as increase a
females risk for osteoporosis later in life.
What are teen eating habits and why are they important to recognize? By understanding teen
eating habits you will be better prepared to evaluate the nutritional adequacy of your diet and
ensure you are meeting the minimum requirements to maintain your health and well being.
Task:
1. Read the article titled “Fast Food Consumption and Dietary Intake.” Write a 2 paragraph
reflection on how you feel (after reading the article) and what you currently know about
teenagers and fast food restaurants. Be sure to include a brief summary of the article
read.
2. Using the websites provided below, compare and contrast an entire day of eating at 2
fast food restaurants (cost is not a factor!)

a) Choose a typical meal that you would eat at each restaurant.
b) Outline how long and what activities you would need to do in order to burn off all
of the calories that you just consumed.
c) What daily food requirements would you be missing for that day?
3. Create a plan for an entire day of eating healthy (make sure you include all the food
groups!) You may not eat at any fast food restaurants.
4. Watch the video clip “SuperSize Me”. Write a 1/2 page summary of how the movie made
you feel. Have you changed your ideas or feelings about eating a fast food restaurant?
Will you be more concerned about what you are putting into your body and how it affects
you?
