New Creation
My
Hope
Everyone is trying to find
salvation
Secular legalism or Idolatry
1) How do you define salvation?
How will you know you have
arrived?
2) What must you do to be
saved?
What rules or rules must you
follow?
I’m meant to be happy and valued
(Creation)
I’m not physically attractive enough
because I’m overweight
(Fall)
I can change through will power,
exercise, weight loss
(Redemption)
I hope is in that when my body is
transformed, I will be loved
(New Creation)
I want people to value me for who I
am (Creation)
But people value success, athletic
achievement, academics
(Fall)
I will do whatever it takes to succeed,
win, or make myself more valuable
(Redemption)
My hope is when people will look at
me and see how valuable I am
(New Creation)

“Church”
What story have you set aside as
“holy?”
Proverbs 4:23
Above all else, guard your heart,
for everything you do flows from it.
The GOSPEL is the good news that
we don’t have to be slaves to
THAT story anymore
The GOSPEL is the good news that
that we can lay down the areas of life
where we have to trust in ourselves
4 foundational TRUTHS of GOSPEL
1) GOD is great, so we don’t have to
be in control
2) GOD is glorious, so we don’t have
to fear others
3) GOD is good, so we don’t have to
look elsewhere
4) GOD is gracious, so we don’t have
to prove ourselves
Courtroom
The assumption is that people
will ask if you live this way
Either because they find you
interesting or they find you
weird
Another assumption is that
you WILL suffer for this
Romans 5
Luke 18
ONE: You shall have no other gods before Me.
TWO: You shall not make for yourself a carved image--any likeness of anything that
is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the
earth.
THREE: You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain.
FOUR: Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.
FIVE: Honor your father and your mother. ✔
SIX: You shall not murder. ✔
SEVEN: You shall not commit adultery. ✔
EIGHT: You shall not steal. ✔
NINE: You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. ✔
TEN: You shall not covet your neighbors house; you shall not covet your neighbors
wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor
anything that is your neighbor
Luke 19

Not WHERE but WHAT

Creation
What do they assume the world
should be like?
What kind of person would they
like to be?
Who are their heroes?
What would have to be in place
for them to be happy?
Fall
How do they describe their
struggles?
What do they feel is their most
pressing problem?
What do they feel they lack?
Who or what do they think is
responsible?
Redemption
What do they think will make life
better?
What provides a sense of escape
or release?
Who or what will deliver their
hopes?
What are their functional saviors,
heavens, hells?
New Creation
What are their hopes?
What is the long-term project to
which they are working?
What are the dreams for which
they make sacrifices?
Have they given up on this
happening? (Negative identity)
Looking for idols
Matt. 6:21
Off ramps
Col. 4:5
Brokenness, Confusion, Anger
Ask good questions.
What do you want out of this?
Why does this matter so much to
you?
Why or why not?
How’s that working for you?
What are you passionate about?
Questions for you
What do they believe or not
believe about God?
Where are the idols?
Where are they looking for
salvation?Where do the 4 truths
connect?
