Improving the
Institutional
Effectiveness
Process
1


The Special Committee found the institution does,
indeed identify expected outcomes, assess the extent
to which it achieves these outcomes, and provides
evidence of improvement based on analysis of the
results in each of its educational programs, to include
student learning outcomes.
Because of the way in which General Education
outcome assessment has been universally embedded
across the curriculum, the faculty may wish to share
the lessons learned from the process they used to
develop their General Education assessment plan with
colleagues at regional, state, or even national
conferences.
2

Planned improvements include:
◦ Program Outcomes
◦ Multiple Measures
◦ Formative Assessment
3

As previously discussed, the institution currently
uses two program outcomes to assess FTES and
Graduation Requirements for all academic
programs. While the results of this assessment
have been instrumental in the decision to
eliminate programs and while it is obviously
important to assess college or system-wide
outcomes, the addition of outcomes tailored to
the specific program and designed to improve
the program should be considered to strengthen
the academic programs.
4

In many instances, student learning outcome
assessment was heavily dependent on
evaluation using instruments such as locally
developed exit exams. The addition of the
use of formative assessment instruments and
processes should be considered in order to
facilitate the improvement of student learning
earlier in the student experience.

The use of multiple indicators and sources of
evidence of student learning, of varying
kinds, gathered at multiple points in time,
within and across student learning outcomes.
I can give more definitions or we can talk
about something more interesting…. what
you are already doing in the classrooms.




What is the harm in getting only one
perspective of student learning?
What do you do in your classrooms to
ensure assessment strategies capture
student learning?
Can it be used to help students in
programs, if so capture the process,
document, and provide evidence.
11


Summative- Measuring the level of success or
proficiency that has been obtained at the end
of a course or academic program, by
comparing it against some standard or
benchmark.
Formative – Feedback that can be used by the
instructor and the students to guide
improvements while the student is still in the
course or academic program.

Compass in a plane is off by 1 degree
◦ After 100 miles, the plane is off course by 1.6 miles
◦ After 1,000 miles, the plane is off course by 16
miles
◦ After 10,000 miles, the plane is off course by 160
miles

How do you know if the students in your
program are off course?
◦ What are you already doing?
◦ Capture the process, document, and provide
evidence
