Sports and entertainment marketing will include a specialized marketing course which is designed for students to develop skills in the areas of facility design, merchandising, advertising, public relations/publicity, event marketing, sponsoring, ticket distribution, and career opportunities as they relate to the sports and entertainment industry. Course Information: Grade Level: 11-12 Credit: 0.5 each trimester Course Materials: Sports and Entertainment Marketing, 2012, Kaser & Oelkers Various other general marketing resources Student Materials: Three-ring binder (at least 3 inches) 10 tab dividers Leadership, Attitude, Performance Resources Pen and Pencil Paper Flash drive (optional) Course Objectives: In order to fulfill the objectives of this course, the student will be expected to study and show sufficient mastery of the following topics: Fundamental marketing principles and concepts as they apply to the sports and entertainment industry Product research and development in sports and entertainment Facility design and components Product planning Advertising, publicity, and public relations as promotional tools Event marketing Sponsorship Ticket price and marketing strategies Sports and entertainment marketing as a career path Link to local Curriculum and State Standards: Available in classroom and on the Tennessee State Education Website. http://www.tn.gov/education/cte/standardscurr/mk_1011.shtml Grading: Per the Alcoa High School Student Handbook, Students earning a numerical average of 93 - 100 will receive an “A”, 85 – 92 a “B”, 75 – 84 a “C”, 70 – 74 a “D”, and 69 or below an “F”. Students not fulfilling the State of Tennessee attendance requirement (see attendance) in any class will receive a grade of “NC” or no credit in that class. All student grades will be weighted as follows: Individual Portfolio Quiz and Test grades Assignments – Review questions, Vocabulary and other assignments as given Reinforcement activities and simulations – Projects with provided rubrics Overall quality of work completion, cooperation, and attitude in class (PROFESSIONALISM) Portfolio/Daily Assignments/Projects – 55% Tests/Quizzes –20 % EOC – 25% Explanation of Assignments & Projects: Expectations of each project will be provided in rubric. Students will have ample class time to complete assignment/projects. When working on a group project, if the group is not working together, the project will be divided. In addition, if class time is not properly used, students will complete the assignment/projects as homework. Due dates will vary for each assignment/projects. The request should include your name, the child's name, the specific activity/materials in which you do not want your child to participate or to which you do not want them exposed, and the nature of your objection. DECA: Students have the opportunity to join DECA, an association of marketing students. It is a co-curricular club in more than 6,000 high schools. Through the integration of individual and group DECA activities with the marketing education instructional program, student skills are cultivated to ensure they have great potential to become future leader in the areas of marketing and management. One part of the DECA program of student activities is the Competitive Events Program. The events are both competency and curriculum based. The competitive events provide recognition for student excellence at the district, state, and national level of competition. Students are not required to join DECA however it is highly encouraged! DECA meets twice a month after school. DECA dues are $15.00 Safety Procedures: All students will complete a safety quiz and MUST achieve a 100% in order to participate in our cookie day that will take place every Friday. Professional Dress: As a class, we will host guest speakers throughout the course. When we have a scheduled guest speaker, students are expected to act and dress professionally. Professional dress will be explained in a lesson prior to the first professional dress day. Policies: Students: 1. Always come to class prepared (bring pencil, paper, folder, etc.) 2. Maintain excellent attendance and punctuality. Good classroom attendance is ESSENTIAL! 3. Follow Overview of Student Expectations given out the first day of school. NO cell phones or electronic devices allowed in the classroom. Follow dress code rules. 4. Treat all computer equipment with respect – failure to do so will result in disciplinary action. 5. Using someone else’s work to complete an assignment or looking at another’s test paper will not be tolerated. If caught cheating, student will receive a “zero” for that assignment and parents will be contacted. 6. Food and drink are not allowed in the room or around the computer area. Water only is allowed around the tables. 7. It is YOUR responsibility to ask for and make up any work missed during an absence from school. All make up work is due within 3 days after your return to school. 8. Respect your teacher and fellow classmates by not talking during instruction or when other students are talking. 9. The teacher will dismiss you, not the bell, remain in your seat until instructed to leave. 10. Represent AHS, Marketing, and DECA in a professional manor.
