Vocabulary: We will have a small group of vocabulary words each week. Acquisition of vocabulary is essential to the success of any high school student in all areas of education. Please note that our knowledge of these words will be cumulative throughout the year. This means that all vocabulary words are fair game on any test throughout the year!
Writing : Periodically, we will have writing assignments that correlate with our reading or particular class focus. Because writing is a process , your grade will highly depend on your effort throughout the writing workshop process.
Independent Reading : You will be required to read independently a book that is aligned with our genre of study. You will be required to create a project (IR Project) that will allow you to share your book and perspective of your chosen reading.
Course Work Grading
The Heath Board of Education grading scale is in your student handbook. I will use this grade scale.
Expectations!
I have no doubt that this will be an amazing year. However, no class, team, or group is successful without expectations (previously known as rules). I have three simple expectations in my class:
Be Respectful
Show respectful for myself, classmates, teacher, and school
Stay quiet while others are speaking
If you have something to say, please raise your hand unless we have established other expectations for the day
Please stay wake in class!
Be Responsible
Please come to class prepared to learn every day with your book, binder, and something to write with.
Please turn in all work on time. NO LATE WORK ACCEPTED unless you have arranged something with me due to an unusual situation.
Know when you need help and come talk to me, I am here to help you but
I need to know you need it!
Be Relentless
Never, ever give up.
Please come to class with a positive and proactive attitude. We all have bad days, but please relax and check your attitude at the door before coming into class.
Always give me (and yourself) your best effort.

Additional Procedures:
Restrooms: Please go to the restroom before class. I will only allow students with extreme emergencies to use the restroom.
Throwing paper away/getting out of seat: Please wait to throw things away until the end of class, getting out of your seat for unnecessary reasons is a distraction and inappropriate.
Tissues: As young adults, you know when you need to use a tissue. Please walk to the tissues located on the back file cabinet, use the tissue and throw it away. Getting a tissue should not be a distraction nor should it be a show.
**Also, anyone who wants to donate a box of tissues will be greatly appreciated!
Make-up work: If you miss class, please know that it is absolutely your responsibility to make up the work you may have missed for the day. There will be a make-up binder in the back of the classroom that you need to check upon your return to class. If you are confused by the work or need help, please find an appropriate time to ask me. (i.e. before/after school, after class) Please know that you are in High School, I will not track you down to let you know what you need to make up, it is your responsibility to check the make-up binder and complete your work on time
