Workshop 3 agenda:
• Today’s workshop will focus on YOU modeling
each principle. We will be role playing, so that
you are comfortable in applying each
principle, and this role playing will help in the
field, home or school.
• For these role playing scenarios, we will form
groups of 3 (we will have 5 groups of 3)
Expectations
• In each group:
1 person will be taking the ABC data
1 person will be acting out the behavior
1 person will be delivering the consequence
• For each scenario, I will provide each group with
an antecedent, and it will be your group’s job to
act out the behavior and the appropriate
consequence. We will also rotate within the
group, so that each person is able to practice
each aspect.
Example:
• Principle: Positive reinforcement
• Antecedent: Just arrived at the movies
Person acting out behavior: the child asked,
“mom, can I have some popcorn, please?”
(add a tap to mom’s shoulder)
Person acting out the consequence: “sure,
thanks for asking me. Here’s your popcorn.”
Person taking ABC: A_____ B______ C ______
Note
• In the field of ABA, punishment is not used.
The list of strategies presented briefly in
Workshop 2 are the go to strategies to use to
decrease problem behavior, without the use
of punishment procedures.
• The examples of punishment presented in this
workshop are solely for the purpose of
practice.
Note
• During role play, I’ll provide the first set of
examples for each principle, then when you
guys rotate, I want the group to come up with
2 other examples.
Ice Breaker
• Chaining activity
• Recall from Workshop 1
• Get a sheet of paper and write down a daily living
skill (Ex: Washing hands), and break down that
big skill, into smaller teachable steps.
• Remember that these small teachable steps lead
to the end behavior, which is washing hands
independently.
• I will give 7-10 minutes
Refresher
• What is positive reinforcement? Please give
me 3 examples.
• What is negative punishment? Please give me
3 examples.
• What is positive punishment? Please give me
3 examples.
• What is negative reinforcement? Please give
me 3 examples.

Positive Reinforcement
• Antecedent: (Discrete Trial Teaching) Therapist
held up a 2D card (chair) for labeling.
• Behavior: The student correctly responds, “Chair”
• Consequence: “Nice job Nicole! Way to go! Here’s
your M&M!”
• A_____B______C______
• Why is this positive reinforcement?
*Each person in the group needs to rotate**
Positive Punishment
• Antecedent: Driving on icy road.
• Behavior: Driving at the normal speed.
• Consequence: Crash into the car ahead.
• A____B____C____
• Why is this positive punishment?
**Rotate within group**

Negative Reinforcement
• Antecedent: Dad and 4 year old Matty went to Toys R
Us to buy some presents.
• Behavior: Matty starts to whine and cry that he wants
“the new Power Ranger” toy. Dad tells him, “Not
today,” and Matty gets louder and louder.
• Consequence: Dad said, “ok I’ll buy it,” and Matty
smiled.
• A____B____C____
• Tell me why this is negative reinforcement.
**Rotate within groups**
• What is the function of Matty’s behavior?
Negative Punishment
• Antecedent: Mom tells Angie (13) to clean her
room.
• Behavior: Angie tells the mom “No! I’m not
cleaning.”
• Consequence: Angie does not get that week’s
allowance.
• A___B___C___
• Why is this negative punishment?
**Rotate within groups**
• What is the function of Angie’s behavior?
