HEREDITY/BEHAVIOR

NOTES

HEREDITY

is

TRANSMISSION OF GENETIC TRAITS,

FROM ONE GENERATION TO THE NEXT,

THROUGH THE PROCESS OF

REPRODUCTION.

*DETERMINED BY CHROMOSOMES.

*POSSIBILITY OF EXACT DUPLICATION OF

ANOTHER HUMAN = 1 IN 300,000,000,000,000 (300 trillion)

*REASON = 23 PAIRS IN EACH PARENT

HEREDITY INFLUENCES OUR IDENTITY:

(in varying degrees)

6 things to know for class

1. Appearance

--shape of eyes, nose, chin, body

--color of eyes, hair, skin

-height,etc….

2. Intelligence(s)

3. Sex

4. Physical Characteristics (not visible to the eye)

Things like:

*Colorblindness

*Baldness (visible once it happens)

*Hemophilia and other diseases (high blood pressure, heart disease, cancer, etc...)

5. Parts of Personality

6. Race --

Biological differences in appearances, not a set absolute, characteristic

Heredity plays a role in shaping our identities, and our identity is unique (one of a kind).

Our behavior (response to the environment or a stimulus) stems from our individuality as we attempt to satisfy unsatisfied needs

KEY COMPONENTS OF OUR INDIVIDUALITY

1. Intelligence = ability to reason and comprehend.

2. Creativity = ability to produce or make something original.

3. Personality = our physical, mental, and emotional state of being.

4. Adaptability = capacity to handle change.

Behavior Modification Attempts

1)Punishment --- Two types =

Type 1 (Presentation Punishment)= Action taken to suppress behavior by giving unwanted consequence.

Example -- yelling for a wrong answer or running laps for talking at practice.

Type 2 (Removal Punishment) = Actions taken to reduce behavior by removing pleasurable occurrences.

Example =

Grounding you for Fs on your report card or no car privileges because you didn’t do your chores.

CONSEQUENCE EFFECTS BEHAVIOR =

Punishment

is designed to weaken behavior/decrease frequency of behavior.

Can be effective for short term behavioral change, long term effect is not overly effective.

Reinforcement

is designed to strengthen behavior or have repeated behavior.

More effective for long term behavioral modification.

Two Types of Reinforcement as well:

(Put the following definitions on your Unit One Vocab)

1) Positive Reinforcement = Strengthening behavior with a desired reward.

Examples = Jolly Rancher for a right answer or a smile when someone says something nice to you, compliments.

2) Negative Reinforcement = Strengthening behavior by removing a unwanted action.

Example = No homework today because the class participated well or no chores at home for getting an A in Social Studies.
